It’s time to look at my ten favorite musical kisses! It’s also time to look at the sun, which is shining gloriously here in Florida. (Oh, no, it’s 42 out there….cold by Florida standards, but no ice here.) Before I take off for a lovely drive I’ll present the first in the top ten. To nobody’s surprise, look who’s showing up…..
#10: You Used to Kiss the Girls - John Hiatt
Why, hi, Mr. Hiatt!
Yep, it’s my favorite living rock songwriter, back again. This time around, it’s a relatively early song from his career, foreshadowing Hiatt’s later life (“now you’ve got one wife, two kids, three cars, four eyes”).
The moral to this story is that the wild young rockers who “used to be too young to die” eventually get to the age where they’re “telling stories to a four-year-old” and discovering the “normal” life.
Hiatt has another “kiss” song (“One Kiss”), where he reiterates this notion of settling down (“y’all just getting home from a long night of self-abuse? Well, me and the missus were just getting the coffee pot to perk!”). His philosophy seems to be the opposite of Mick and Keith: what a joy it is getting old!
