The safest way to store your password

I'm finding ways to safely store my passwords, as I'm a scatterbrain and I don't have a keen memory.
I tried writing all of them in a notebook, but I lost the notebook in the past, so I stopped this practice. What if somebody found it? Then they all have the keys to my accounts.
I tried writing them online, but just yesterday, my MS word failed.
Then I tried to let the site remember my password, only to expose my accounts to anyone using the laptop.
I tried e-mailing the list to myself, and it's working so far, but I'm wary that someone might be able to hack into my email.
The safest way is to memorize them, but apparently, I can't do this for all of my accounts.
What's the safest way to store passwords?

I write them in a notepad. I kept some in my wallet others in the drawer. Good thing I can easily find them

There are apps that will make up passwords for each site you use and remember them for you. Look at this article.
