A Cold and Dark Place

Since my mom died a few weeks back, our living room looks like a cold and dark place. I am just feeling weird because it needs to light candles on the altar. But it is not a good thing to leave the candles unattended. I do not want a cold and dark place for my deceased parents, so I put a lamp on their altar at night. Do you have altars for your loved ones who passed away? Image Credit: nancyoyula.files.wordpress.com

I have never heard of putting an alter up in a home for deceased family. I do know that many people here put flowers in front of the pictures they have of their deceased family

Some think the flowers do the same thing.

I personally think that some Mexicans practiced it. I guess some Chinese people do this but in their temples. For the undying love for our parents, we do this for them not to be forgotten.

Don't be worried. My parents are in good hands now. They do not need to deal with this pandemic. Welcome to myLot.

Honestly, we got this idea from our granny who tends to pray religiously every day. It has been more than 2 years that we haven't seen her. At her age 103, she needs to be visited often.

@Shavkat Yes, she does. She's lived a good long life.

It's not usually something that is done here but I think it is a lovely tradition.

Not all Filipinos do this practice. It was only practiced by some here. In my family, it became a tradition to remember our parents who are in heaven now.

Sorry to hear about your mother. Keeping a lamp up in her memory will keep her in heart.

You have an altar in your living room? My living room is just that - it's for the living. Sorry for your loss.

I understand your need to do that but no, doing that's not our way.
