Not A Bad Day At the Casinos

Of course I mentioned that the wife were off to the casinos today. We started off at the Hollywood in Maryland Heights, MO, and ended up at the Ameristar nearby. We budgeted $400 for this one and initially took $200 (we only dip into the rest of the budget if we need to). All said between the two of us we lost $109. But it was a lot of fun, and we only do it for entertainment of course. So, for us it was money well spent. No casinos were harmed in this outing and we did not require the U-Haul after all. lol

It's great you had an enjoyable day out which didn't bankrupt you. Many years ago Mike and I went to Atlantic City, NJ with my grandparents. We left with the same amount we took in plus a little extra. Not sure how my grandparents made out.

Yeah. That does happen sometimes. A few months ago the wife went on a little gambling trip in Iowa and we did very well. By that I mean, we came back with a tiny bit more than we started with. The key to gambling is to just have fun and to understand it's for entertainment and nothing more.

glad you had a good time. I will be in AC next month for my birthday dinner. I"ll put the obligatory $20 into a slot machine.

@porwest We don't go to AC to gamble. My family, ex, and I would go to see concerts at Convention Hall. We would go there to have dinner at Carmine's in the Tropicana casino and would be killing time until our reservation was called. I'd even make trips just to the now-defunct Pier Shops for the LUSH shop. I have no interest in cards or other types of gambling other than MegaMillions, Powerball, and the occasional scratch off.

@porwest I am fine with buying lottery tickets for a couple of dollars but otherwise I figure if I'm going to spend money unnecessarily then I should have something to show for it. haha

@NJChicaa I won't bust your chops over it like I do on other things. Gambling is not everyone's thing, and considering even I recognize it's a complete waste of money aside from the entertainment value I get from it, it's probably best to avoid it.

Which one? The fact that we didn't lose all the money or we didn't have to rent a U-Haul to get the winnings home?

If you enjoyed yourself and had fun at the slots that's what matters. Though would've been great to at least break even, if not win.

That's the whole thing with gambling for us. Just have fun and don't expect to win.

I'd love to hit it big on the slots sometime. Not gonna happen. The slots in Erie were SO TIGHT. It's no fun when you can't win a little, even if you eventually lose it.

@porwest Life-changing money for sure. Cash option for the Ohio Classic Lotto is now almost $9 million. That would solve so many problems.

@LindaOHio Yep. Let's see. According to my math, if you took the cash option, after taxes you'd take home a cool $2.7 million. Invested into a simple S&P 500 tracking fund which is relatively low risk, and you could pull in about $162,000 a year. More than enough to live on and have some fun with, I'd say.

Define big. I mean, are we talking a few thousand or life changing money? Granted, few slots offer life changing loots.

Like you say, it was for entertainment.

That's the key. You never walk into a casino expecting to walk out with the money you came in with.

That is great that you had a good time and only loss $109. Next time you might win.
