Unsalted Pecans And Oatmeal

Was talking to a friend of mine on the phone just now. She has high cholesterol. Her statins have not helped. Her primary care doctor has tried all kinds of meds, and nothing has helped. She was referred to a cardiologist on Friday. She was surprised he told her to stop all processed foods, eat old fashioned oatmeal, and a handful of unsalted nuts every day. He promised her cholesterol numbers would come down soon. I hope they do for her sake. She is really trying. I told her my numbers are always good. Maybe because I do all of the above. I do eat some processed food from time to time. But I also go without eating at other times. Hoping her next labs will be much better. Was good talking to her.

My closterol is barely normal. I take medication and eat healthy food. I can’t eat peanuts due to potassium.

I try to catch the nuts on sale. They can be pricey.

My mother mentioned a dietitian told me about eating oatmeal. I doubt she does it though and she doesn’t take statins anymore as it made her joints hurt so much so I doubt her cholesterol will ever lower. She loves junk food!

I have never been a huge fan of junk food. I will have a treat from time to time but it is all in moderation.

Yes processed foods - especially their over consumption is not good. Often we do not control our taste Buds urge much. I have been unwell since the last few days and somehow not feeling like too much of Milk Tea. So I have switched to Green tea in the evening and trying not to have a heavy diet.

Nuts in their natural form (unsalted) are an excellent part of anyone's diet. I love pecans, but am more apt to take a few almonds for a quick snack.

This is exactly what the doctor told to my husband years ago. High cholesterol is genetic in his family, but stopping all processed food and eating fresh nuts every day helped a lot.

That's interesting, I hope it helps your friend. My cholesterol levels are pretty good, but my triglycerides are terribly high. I'm trying a new med, but we'll see.

Well I'll be. I hope it works out for her by lowering her cholesterol. My LDL was a tad bit high when my PCP told me the results during my physical two months ago. She also tells me to avoid canned veggies and each fresh or frozen, stay away from ice cream and other high-cholesterol foods.

Hope it works out. I am a great fan of oatmeal, and my book recommends it to maintain healthy cholesterol. I also eat oily fish, with lots of omega 3. On my last health check my levels were good. I have also read that probiotic foods, like bio live yogurts are a help, but can have some unexpected side effects as you are eating a micro organism!

@CarolDM I have read that vitamin like C and E are beneficial to artery health, but have to be natural, not the synthetic variety. Trouble is there is said to be so many foods that are good for you, even eating only a small amount, daily, would balloon you up to twenty stone!

I do as well. She is struggling. I eat oatmeal often. Glad your levels are good too. I am not a big yogurt fan but every now and then I will have some. I found a coffee flavor and it was great.
