Excitement during the night

Yesterday Dale and I were in the backyard when he called me over to look at something. We have a Ginkgo tree that we planted when Kristin was a baby. So it's 31 years old and has the most beautiful yellow fan shaped leaves every summer. I walked over to it and the photo above shows what I saw. Early that morning two dogs chased a bear into our yard and it tried to climb that Ginkgo tree! You can see two places the bear was clawing. Right in our yard! The limbs are too small for it to get up very high, but I guess the dogs quit. We have security cameras, in fact one is on that tree. When we looked at the film, it showed the dogs and we could hear and see chips flying, but the bear was above the camera. Dale guessed it was probably about a hundred fifty pound bear (black bears here). We see tracks sometimes and they have crossed the highway going through our yard..one was hit a while back and was dead in the median. I'm surprised Dale didn't hear all the barking and commotion. Some excitement during the night and we slept right through it!

Wow that is excitement in your yard. I am sure that was a lot of commotion. I hope the tree survives.

Holy cow! A black bear in your yard. We've never seen one around here although they have been spotted in some surrounding counties.

Yeah, my back yard was a little too close for me! But I know they do pass through at times.

If that bear had gotten angry, I'd feel sorry for those dogs! One swipe with a paw, could peal a dog's back wide open.

@1creekgirl We vacationed on Drummond Island. The motel owner's dog had claw mark scars up his back. The bulldog attacked a bear, to protect their Uncle Johnny. The Uncle was not harmed.

Wow, I always thought bears were at least 300 or more lbs,150 is about the size of a great dane or bull mastiff.

Perhaps a young one. I have read that bears usually stay with their mom's for about 2 or 3 years before taking off on their own. There aren't any bears around here so I only know that which I've read online

We've seen larger bears, but this must have been a smaller one.
