I think Gracie has PTSD

A few days ago I wrote about the black bear that two dogs chased into our back yard. We saw on the security camera how the dogs were barking and yelping and the wood chips were flying as the bear tried to climb our gingko tree. Then one of the dogs ran into the boat shelter through the small door for our cat Gracie to go in and out where she eats and sleeps. The next day we couldn't find her. Yesterday we were really getting worried when she still hadn't come home. Dale looked through the woods behind our house and we called and called. I was afraid a coyote or a bear might have gotten her. Then late last night we checked the camera again and there was that fluffy gray tail going through the little door. So thankful she was back! We realized she probably got frightened when that dog came charging into her space and scared the mess out of her. Ever since that car crashed into our garage a couple of Christmas mornings ago and almost killed Gracie who was sleeping right there, she's been a nervous wreck. I really think she has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from such a close brush with death. She's such a sweetheart and getting too old to have to be so nervous. Any suggestions on how to help her?

I don't know what would help her but maybe your vet could suggest something? I know CBD is also now available for pets. That may work as well. I hope you find something that will help her relax!

I don't have any suggestions, but I hope something can be done to help Gracie. The good thing is she did come back and is safe now . . . those incidents must really have scared her. Something spooked my MIL's cat once and he didn't return . . . it was worrisome for a few days. But somehow the neighbor discovered him in his big cactus out back . . . the cat got stuck there and no one had gone back there to notice.

@1creekgirl Yep - he had to be taken to the vet to get all the needles out and make sure he was ok

Thank Goodness you found Gracie and she is OK. I had a cat that I think had that. He was terrified when a tornado hit here, and trees were falling all around. He wasn't the only one! . Anyway, anytime it would storm after that he would start meowing and get very frightened.

I guess they're a lot like humans.

There are some good suggestions in the comments. Can you make her a secure place in the boat-shed? Like a 'cat-kennel' in a dark corner where she might fee safer. Good luck with it.

She used to sleep on a little bed up in the boat and Dale had a heat lamp that kept her warm in the winter. But now she can't jump up there (probably arthritis) so he made her a little bed that's lower and still has the heat lamp. He's going to make her cat door smaller so a dog can't get in.

@1creekgirl It's hard to know how to help them when they get older.

Glad to hear Gracie has returned home. I daresay that dogs crashing into her home and the commotion with a bear upset her. Hope she settles back into her routine soon

She's a rather strange cat. When I do let her in, she runs straight to Nathan's room and hides under the bed. She's never liked to be picked up or cuddled, but rubs against our legs and wants to lick us.

It's not easy, but all I can do is say time and patience a lot of patience. She may never get over it, or she'll adjust and adapt. Hard to say, really. Make sure she has a happy place she can go, too.

@1creekgirl She might. But, I meant, create/find a place you can create for her, that can be used as a safe space. And, while I agree, there are treatments you can do, patience is the hardest part. Cats tend to be very stubborn.

She is a beauty. The only thing I have to offer is for you to make her an indoor only kitty, that way she'll always be protected.

Not really, you'd be surprised how quickly they realize that the litter in the pan is for her use.

I am sorry to know this. I am not sure what the solution would be for a cat Vicki. Poor kitty.

I've read that's possible. Just let the cat know she is safe and loved with lots of pets and soothing talk.
