Another Australian Cricketing Legend Passes

Australia lost a cricket legend a few days ago when Rod Marsh, wicket-keeper and batsman, died from a heart attack. And now, another cricketing legend, Shane Warne, has died from the same – a heart attack. Warnie, as he was commonly known, was only 52. Someone called him a ‘flawed genuis’ which is probably somewhat near the truth. He had a lot of turmoil and controversy off the field. A Victorian, he made his Test debut for Australia in 1992 and played his last Test in 2007, setting a world record of 708 Test wickets. He is said to have rejuvenated the art of spin-bowling. He died in Thailand where he was holidaying with friends. I wonder if there will be a third cricketer to die? Let’s hope not. Cricket is very popular in some countries, although not in the USA. India, Pakistan and Nepal are some that come to mind. The photo was taken by Vince in Nepal where, in poor districts, almost anything can be used as a bat, ball and wickets.

Over-simplification: baseball without the attitude….and much, MUCH longer.

They will indeed. Warne in particular was very charismatic and had a lot of publicity over his lifetime - not all of it good.

He was a popular cricketer among Indians. Many of the kids used to follow his style of bowling. He has the highest wickets in the test matches under his name which seems impossible to beat by anyone at present. It was shocking and upsetting for me to hear this news. I used to love him and he was at his best in the 1990s when he was almost impossible to beat by the batsmen.

@JudyEv there was a time when the Australian team was at high when there were players like Gilchrist, Hayden, Ponting, Bret Lee, Macraath we're in the team.

I have noticed that nearly all the myLotters from your country know many of our cricketers - even more than I do. Shane Warne was certainly incredibly talented. My husband read that he broke both legs as a boy and will pull himself around in a cart. Warne said he thought he gained his upper body strength from those days.

@JudyEv you would think someone close to him or his doctor would have had enough sense to get him to eat something.

It seems he drank nothing but black and green juices for a fortnight. That would be a really stupid thing to do but that's what they're saying.

He was very 'Australian' as he was a bit of a larrikin. Actually a lot of a larrikin if there can be such a thing.
