Charged a fee for using a credit card

Went out to eat tonight to an Italian restaurant.
When we got the bill it said: cash: $140.xx / card: $146.xx.
We didn't have that much cash on us so ended up charging it.
$6.xx is not a small fee.
I wish we had known beforehand that the restaurant charged a fee for paying with a credit card.
Would have withdrawn money prior to going there.
On the plus side, the card we used gives us 1.5% cash back, so we will get a few bucks back on the card.

They don't always tell you upfront that they charge a fee. And I hate that.

@Adie04 I once bought a turnover at an Italian grocery store and used a card so I can get cash back. Looked at the receipt and noticed the total was more than usual. Turned out they charged a fee for using a card. That fee was more than my cash back.

Unfortunately, not all do that. Not all restaurants say they are cash-only either until you actually sit down at a table and order the food.

@lovebuglena This is not correct, you could have withdrawn cash and you would have not paid the fee.

@LadyDuck that’s assuming there’s your bank nearby. If you withdraw cash not from your bank you pay a fee.

Yes many places do that now.
I read that the fees are going up for using a credit card too.
Sorry that happened to you.

If restaurants charge a fee for credit/debit card use they should specify that on their Yelp restaurant pages. Not everyone walks around with lots of money in their wallet. And they should also specify that somewhere on the restaurant door/window in case people are in the area, see the place, and wanna go eat there.
I found that some restaurants are actually cash-only. If that's the case they should make that known on Yelp and by the entrance too. This is worse than the fee thing because if you don't have a card you have no way to pay for the bill unless you know it's cash-only before you sit down to eat.

I don't want to do that either but if not enough cash then no choice. Of course, if there happens to be our bank near the restaurant then we can go withdraw cash. But that's usually not the case.

Some charge fees here. In fact, I think most do but it's not a lot of money usually. Your fee sounds a bit excessive.

I am not sure on the exact number but seems it's close to 4%.

They get charged a fee; but 99.9% of restaurants absorb it. Sorry you had to pay a fee.

Yeah, it sucks, especially since how much you pay depends on the bill total. Good thing the place was not cash-only or we'd have no way to pay at all.
