Cardinals and Unknown Trails

Today while I was on the trail I saw two red birds on a low hanging branch. A male and female. I knew because the male is a brilliant red and the female is a dull brownish red.. I tried to walk by quietly but they heard me and were quick to fly away. I hoped they met again to continue their courtship. We can’t have to many baby cardinals. It was sunny and colder today. The wind was strong and had my hair standing on end. I continued my walk up the hill where they recently laid a waterline. I’d wondered how far it went since I could only see to the top of the hill. I walked to the top and could see it was at least a mile before it turned to the right. One day soon I’ll walk on further and see how it goes. Do you like to follow unknown trails?

I don't take to trails too often, but sometimes I get a little adventurous. Depends on where I am of course. As for cardinals, they are and have always been my absolute favorite bird. Every time I hear their song I make it a point to look for them.

Cardinals are my favorites with Blue Jays next in line. I like all birds and don’t see near as many as I’d like too.

@porwest I don’t see many birds at all. I hear one chirping now but I haven’t seen it. I’m outside on my deck.

@RubyHawk Blue Jays are beautiful birds too. I hardly ever see them, though. Mostly cardinals, sparrows, finches and robins. Oh, and those ugly crows. lol

I love exploring new or unknown trails, and occasionally I will create my own trails. I’ve gotten lost a few times, but my Boy Scout ingenuity has always gotten me back on track and home safely.

@RubyHawk I'm doing well now. Just a little allergy flare up, but it's all under control now.

@moffittjc That’s good. These allergy flare ups can be terrible and aggravating. Is this your off time from paintball?

I like the idea of hiking up in a mountain and enjoy the scenery.

Such nice trails you have there Ruby. Yes there is a trail over here, but I got to be extremely careful there.

@RubyHawk Yes you just never know who might be lurking..its a sad fact now Ruby. But sometimes I throw caution and just have to go there. It is a lovely trail and not hard to walk at all.

@RebeccasFarm That’s true. I sometimes get a little nervous but I try not let it interfere with my walks.

Is it a difficult trail to walk or unsavory people might be there?

I guess sometimes, but usually I stick to roads. I don' like to walk in a wooded area by myself that much.Although where I used to live I did. I saw a red headed sparrow today. I had never seen one before.

@snowy22315 Mine must be on a book shelf but I’d have to search to find it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a red headed sparrow. I have a bird book I used to keep handy but I’ve lost track of it.

That picture was taken during the summer but birds never stay long enough to get a picture.

I think the male cardinal is beautiful. Why the female is such a dull color I don’t know. I guess the bright red attracts the female.

I read a book Song of the Cardinal by Gene Stratton Porter. Do you know it? When I rode my pony before I was married, I used to follow trails in the bush behind our property. I would be gone all afternoon sometimes.

I don’t recall reading Song of the Cardinal but it sounds like a-good read. Riding a pony on the trails would have been fun. Nice that you could do that.

No, I prefer to stay on trail I know, it's too hot here with no trees to walk where you wouldn't be able to get home quickly.
