Question of the Day- Do You Find Squirrels Annoying?

For me, I find these cute (not) pesky rodents a pain. One main reason is when they come and eat at my bird feeder. I really enjoy watching birds come and eat there. But a bird feeder says "free meal" to squirrels and that can cause problems. It definitely attracts many to the feeder just like metal to a magnet! Which means several squirrels competing and always stealing the bird seed away from my "feathered friends" when I put seed out for them to eat. Here are few more annoying habits that can be attributed to these "food scavengers." *I've had one build a nest in my porch ceiling by gnawing at and entering a small hole. *These pests have eaten my tomatoes as soon as they start to ripen. Particularly annoying is they only take one bite and leave the rest to rot on the ground! *They take up residence in nearby trees and make quite a lot of noise. *And all their nut burying leaves my lawn all torn up with holes. *I've even read they gnaw through electrical wires but so far, no problems with my cable yet, phew! I need to find out the life expectancy of squirrels. I could probably name them by now. I've got a couple of them that are really persistent at getting at the seed in the feeder, even climbing up the pole to get there. Wonder just how long I must suffer. Although squirrels have some unique behaviors a squirrel lover, I am not Can you name any unique squirrel behaviors? I'll list a few in my response Are you squirrel lover or hater? Why or why not? P.S.- came across this funny photo to accompany my post. What do you think that squirrel is saying? -My guess is "Who stole all the nuts." Some Source Material- takeayard.com

They CAN be, but mostly they don't seem to get into too much by me. There's a crap ton of them though. But having been in pest control in a former life I am very well aware of their very potentially destructive nature. They can certainly be a nuisance.

Look at the bright side, if the cost of hamburger gets much higher you might have Squirrel Helper for dinner….and the meat will be free!

There are a sh** load of them. I trap them and take them to a park a distance away. I like to spread the misery around

Yes, a mixed bag for sure... Fun squirrel facts: -5 to 10 year life span -When squirrels feel threatened, they run away in a zigzag pattern. This is an incredibly useful strategy to escape hawks and other predators. -Squirrels have four front teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives.

@snowy22315 Yes, they had some unusual traits to share. They need those teeth for all those nuts they chew on

Their teeth are quick sharp. They have chewed through a garden protection nylon net I bought for my tomatoes and got at them. Wish they would stick to their nuts! Fun facts: Squirrels have four front teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. -Squirrels are most closely related to the dormice.

I'm not a squirrel lover. They are quite a giant pain. You need a squirrel guard on your bird feeder. People feed them too often. This happened with my mother. The squirrel got into the house because my mother was feeding him with the door open. He went berserk in the house, climbing the Christmas tree, the drapes, running all over. Took quite a bit to get him out.

I have always adored squirrels. My Dad used to have a time with them eating his bird seed. He finally gave in and said, oh well, they have to eat too.

Squirrels are persistent at scavenging food. If they know there is a free meal of birdseed, it's party time. One squirrel becomes many.

It's a love/hate thing here. Are they cute - they sure are. But they're not so cute when they're digging holes everywhere and destroying any growing sprouts . They do steal birdseeds here too. Caption: Insert nuts here.

Last year I had one squirrel but there aren't any bird feeders here nor are there nut trees so without a source for food it probably gave up on my yard ..... hopefully anyway, I don't need varmints that might destroy my car etc.

I've only seen the one last year so I didn't know all this, maybe the one I had has found greener pastures or something.

I think squirrels can be a great nuisance as you have shown DB. Here I own nothing so I don't let them bother me. But there are many of them too many. I wonder if there is a way you could put the bird feeders somewhere out of reach. I have seen a few YouTube videos about how people do rhis

Yes, they definitely seem to be overpopulated OT. You can put a guard on your feeder to keep them at bay, however they wait for the birds to knock seeds on the ground for them to eat. It is a losing battle as they are persistent buggers. Fun squirrel facts: -5-to-10-year life span -Squirrels are most closely related to the dormice.

No, that squirrel is saying, “What do you MEAN you don’t think I’m cute????” I love my squirrels. I have a couple who’ll take a peanut right out of my hand. I learned a long time ago to forego the bird feeder, given how the birds were eating the squirrel food and the squirrels were eating the bird food. I have some heavy-duty plastic shelves sitting out, and I put food on it every morning and let them pick and choose who wants want.
