Happy Birthday (Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year)!

April 14, 1932 was probably an unremarkable day in the world. The Depression was well underway. Poor people in eastern Kentucky probably had no clue that there was a stock market crash. It was in this world that Loretta Webb was born on this day. Today we know her as Loretta Lynn. And today she’s 90. Loretta is one of our few remaining country legends. Her career began sixty years ago. She wasn’t the only woman to write songs (Cindy Walker was primarily a songwriter for a good 15 years before Loretta came on the scene), but she was one of the first to write and record them. She became featured as the “girl singer” on the Wilburn Brothers’ syndicated TV show (the clip below is from that, with Doyle [to her right] and Teddy [to her left] helping her on the song) as her career took off. And off and off. As popular as she was, the 1980 biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter solidified her place in American popular culture. She’s won Grammy awards, induction into the Country Music, Nashville Songwriters, AND Songwriters Halls of Fame, Kennedy Center Honors recognition, a 2010 Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Not bad for a poor girl from Butcher Holler, Kentucky. God bless you, Loretta! Here she is singing “Happy Birthday” to herself

That link doesn't work. You can put this link in it's place, though.

That’s weird, because it works on mine. I think we’re having a Police album tonight: ghosts in the machine!

@BarBaraPrz Sometimes links from Bing work and sometimes they don't. I have no clue why.

Surprisingly I actually like some of her songs. I read about her and the crap she's taken from that hubby of hers. I didn't stick around long after the first altercation with my ex thankfully.

@rebelann — I think she really loved him, even with his faults.

Yeah, it’s amazing what she’d take off of him. She’d tell a floozy he was seeing “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man)” then tell him “Don’t Come Home a-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind).”

@RubyHawk — was it “Fist City”? Or was that one written when she looked out and saw Doo’s girlfriend in the audience at a show? (What a sleaze he was. )

@FourWalls Yes she did. I recalled the word as quick as I saw it. Do you remember the song she wrote when she found him cuddled up with a woman in a car? I loved all her songs. I’d love to hear them again.

Nice tribute! What a Country superstar Heck, a non-country boy like me even knows who she is. Of course, watching the movie about her life "Coal Miner's Daughter" didn't hurt. So, said another way, not too shabby for a "Honky Tonk Girl."

Why thank you! She’s so deserving of all the accolades we can give her. I think her performing career has ended after that significant stroke she had a few years ago. That makes me even more grateful that I saw her live.

@FourWalls I know and it was so sad what happened at her ranch. I recently rad this in our local news... .."Loretta Lynn’s 90th birthday will be marked by Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry with an edition of Opry Country Classics on Thursday (14) in honor of one of its most distinguished members. The show will include performances by Lynn’s sister and fellow Opry member Crystal Gayle, the Gatlin Brothers, Elizabeth Cook, and Maggie Rose, as well as featuring the Opry debut of duo Twitty and Lynn. Tayla Lynn and Tre Twitty are the grandchildren of Lynn and her frequent singing partner Conway Twitty. They perform their own tribute show to the duo, who are known to them as “Memaw” and “Poppy.” More names are to be announced for the tribute bill."

I’m glad you enjoyed it. She’s such a treasure. And, God willing, one of Canada’s great singer/songwriter legends will be turning 90 in 18 months: the great Ian Tyson.

That explains the title of the movie called "Coal Miner's Daughter." Loretta is indeed a musician icon.

“Coal Miner’s Daughter” is the title of her very autobiographical song from 1971, and when she wrote her first autobiography she also titled it Coal Miner’s Daughter. As all biopics do, the film took liberties with the truth but was generally based on her book.

I thought she started singing much younger than 30. At least the movie alludes to that fact.

She was. Remember, though, she got married at 14 and wasn’t at the point of pursuing things that strongly at first. She was burning singing, though.
