A very early wake up

I hate waking up super early, but that's exactly what I will have to do Monday as I have been summoned to appear in court for jury duty. I am gonna have to set up my alarm for 6 am probably. Maybe even earlier than that. I am not gonna be in the happiest of moods. I hope I will at least have time to have some coffee. But that probably won't be the case. The commute is very long and I don't want to be late.

Put coffee in a thermos so you can have it while you go there.

@lovebuglena -If you do not have coffee at home I think the best is to get it at the ferry terminal.

I am not sure I have a thermos. But either way, I'd have to carry it around the whole day and I don't want to do that. If I don't have coffee at home I may get it at the ferry terminal.

I can do that but it's bulky. I don't want to have to carry it with me all day.

That is a good idea. I usually do not go to bed without hubby but I may have to try that because he doesn't like to go to sleep early.

Yes, but maybe if you're late you will be excused. Just tell them that you cannot get there on time due to the commute. I always get out of jury duty because in my 20+ years working in local municipal government, I worked very closely with the District Attorney and many other prosecutors. So I always end up getting excused because of that.

@lovebuglena I wonder if the clerk has the power to dismiss potential jurors, or if a judge has to do that?

I wasn't late lol. Actually got there almost half hour earlier. I got excused though after telling them that my dad is in ICU and I wanna be around in case anything bad happens. That was when I was in a courtroom for a case with many other jurors. I probably should've told that to the file clerk when I got to the court. Maybe they would've let me go right away and I wouldn't even have to wait with everyone to see if I will get picked for a case or not.

@moffittjc I wish I knew. Thankfully, after the judge excused me I was never told to come back in again.

Jury duty can be exhausting. I got out of it last time as I explained to them my son was having surgery that same week, and I had to be there. I took documentation I got from the Dr. in case they didn't believe me, but they did, I was excused that time, anyway.

My Dad is in the hospital in ICU. Been there for two weeks already. I can't provide them with proof though. At least not on the spot.

What does it mean if you are excused? Do they postpone for a later date or do you not have to serve at all for a long time?

@lovebuglena No, if you have a valid excuse, which I did, they simply move on down their list. I will be called again, I'm sure. They don't postpone the case they are selecting jurors for, unless for some reason they cannot find enough jurors because of valid reasons, worry over people knowing too much about cases,(which often happens with small communities) and so forth. Sometimes they move cases to other towns or parts of a state because they feel they will get jurors who are not prejudiced against the case in general, due to too much publicity, and so on. Unfortunately if it's a big nasty case, usually they can't move the cases far enough away to make a difference.
