No, I’m not turning sixteen. (Well, I have over 40 years’ experience at 16, let’s say. ) And no, this isn’t a “sixteen” countdown. This is the last of the “16” songs for a while. Meanwhile, let’s celebrate the turning of the page to another year with a song that has an age in its title! #8: Only Sixteen - Sam Cooke Maybe the first song Dr. Hook covered that wasn’t written by Shel Silverstein! Yes, they had a hit with this song in early 1976. Sam Cooke wrote it, however, and had the first hit with it. A lovely blend of mid-tempo ballad, R&B, and doo-wop made this a most memorable tune. And the narrator gets smart by the age of 17 (“I was a mere lad of 16, I’ve aged a year since then”)! Enjoy one of the great early rock classics. Only Sixteen Written by Sam Cooke Recorded by Sam Cooke Released as a single, 1959 I was too young to know:

It is such a “teenage love song,” isn’t it? “She was too young to fall in love, and I was too young to know.”

@FourWalls I was born that year...I think my cries and screams were louder....I don't recall them being musical...but definitely rhythmic...like any other baby's.

She expected me to know adult stuff as soon as I was born. Sigh...what these Americans are....

Heard Buffett sing that song, “Another Saturday Night”? Sam Cooke wrote that. (Thanks, Jimmy, I’m gonna get this kid a musical education somehow. )

Sam Cooke's voice was so cool. I didn't know he wrote songs too.

He wrote a lot of things that were covered later, like “Another Saturday Night” that Cat Stevens did and “Twistin’ the Night Away” by Rod Stewart. The first song I heard of his was Teresa Brewer covering “You Send Me.”

I remember the Dr. Hook cover very well. I was 15 when it came out, and had a mad crush on the 16-year-old girl who lived down the street. I never told her and she moved away, but that's another song for another time.

I did know that the late Sam Cooke who was before my time wrote the song "Only Sixteen" since I heard that was a singer.
