Home again after an Easter away

We were away for Easter and now I’m finding hard to get going again. We were taking photos at a horse endurance ride and the weather was very warm for several days but then cooled off a little on the last day. Which reminds me of another difference in the way we say things. In Australia, we mostly say ‘I got sunburnt’ or ‘I got a touch of sunburn’ but we never say ‘I got A sunburn’. The latter is what I read mostly on myLot from those in other countries who stay out in the sun too long. I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter. We thought the highway would be packed on Easter Monday but we had a really smooth trip home. The photo is mine from the Easter ride.

These are all very experienced endurance horses. There are some lovely horses in the sport.

@JudyEv That is awesome for the kids in school. Never hurts to instill good habits at an early age.

Most here take great care to cover up too. School-kids aren't allowed out at recess or lunch unless they have their hats on.

@kareng When we were in France and surrounding countries I was really surprised that so few people wore hats. I think our ozone layer is more depleted than that in the northern hemisphere.

When I was younger, everyone was desperate to get a good suntan but now people cover up a lot more.

I've used and heard a few other people from military families use the former ‘I got sunburnt’, I've also used 'I'm sunburned' .... of course these days I'm much more careful with staying in the sun too long. I think the former is more from people I've met from the deep south. When I was a kid we mostly lived on Army bases and many of the kids I'd meet had moms from foreign countries like Germany, Japan and Italy. It lent an interesting mix to American English.

Yes, very interesting. Kids with foreign born moms (back in the 50s) would pick up words their moms would say then many of the rest of us would pick them up as well.

I can imagine you would have a mix of idioms. I find it quite intriguing how there are these differences in how we describe things.

@JudyEv I have read the north and south poles are shifting. It could partially be that. It is a normal thing for them to shift. Just some changes are now being felt from it according to the article.

We seem to burn much more quickly than we ever used to. We're told the ozone layer is very depleted in the southern hemisphere. I guess they know what they're talking about.

The joy on those riders faces is priceless. I've said it both ways. Another way I've said about a sunburn is, "I wound up sunburned." Those times are few now that I'm more diligent. It's cold and rainy here today. My Easter was spent with the tummy flu.

I'm sorry you weren't well over Easter. As youngsters, we were all desperate for suntans but now everyone covers up a lot more - or else they slather on lots of sun cream.

One of the things I like is the way Brits (and probably Australians, too), say that someone goes “to hospital,” but we in America say they go “to THE hospital.” I hope you had a great time, despite “a” sunburn. Hope you had a great holiday as well!

In Italian we say "I got sunburnt" not "a sunburn", it's a different way to express the same concept. I am glad to see you back and I hope you had an enjoyable Easter. We had beautiful weather and very warm.

I would say I got sunburned but I've not had too much sun in recent years. I'm glad your trip back home was uneventful. I've been busy doing nothing at home anyway. Now that the temps are going up a little I'm planning on taking some is my giveaway to salvation army tomorrow and I'll need to box it up before work later.

I have been adding bits and pieces to a box and now have it nearly full. Our temps have gone down! It always amuses me how we are mostly so opposite to the rest of myLotters, as regards weather.

@MarshaMusselman We have a couple of boxes in the garage - one is for redeemable bottles. We put them in a big bin at the clubhouse and the social committee gets the funds from these. The other box contains things for the thrift shop.

We say the same as you. To say 'a burn' implies an isolated patch. So we would say we suffered 'a burn' if we accidentally touched our arm on the oven shelf, for example. But sunburn is something you generally get pretty much all over!

@JudyEv Things have changed haven't they? My mother used to encourage me to get out in the sun and get a bit of colour!

Everyone really tries to avoid getting sunburnt nowadays because of the risk of skin cancer. In our state, kids aren't allowed out in the school playground unless they're wearing hats.
