Intermittent Fasting Update

Wow! Only 4 weeks in (if that) doing the 8/16 intermittent fasting, I have lost 6 pounds!!! 8/16 means eat during 8 hour period, fast for 16. My fasting period is from 7pm-11am. I was a pretty big night time snacker, even if it was just grabbing a handful of peanut pretzels, or a couple of cookies, or a mini ice cream bar, or, well, all of the above. It has been hard getting my family to go along with this because I have to finish eating by 7pm and some people walk in at 8pm with dinner. Sorry, can't eat it. If I do I have to shift from 8pm-12noon. I don't think shifting the time is helpful. I think it would not serve the purpose. I think consistency is important. The fact that I have lost 6 pounds in 4 weeks is proof of that. Exercise has been limited to getting up every hour or so and standing on a twisting board for a few minutes, tightening my stomach muscles and twisting my body. I have arthritis in my knees and shoulders. I hope to try and get back on the treadmill but at a much slower pace and shorter period of time, or maybe go for walks when the weather improves. I can't risk my knees acting up again (they are stable now). Just goes to show how snacking can affect weight. This fast result is motivational for me.

Whatever works for you. When I want to lose weight I take a little less food on my plate. That’s what I used to do but I haven’t gained any weight in a long time. I walk and go to the gym most days. Take care of your knees.

I was really guilty of night time snacking because there was no one around to see me do it.

@RubyHawk Did I really want anyone to see me with a jar of Nutella and a spoon eating right out of the jar? I did stop that when the Christmas sweets came into the house. But that's how bad I was.

Wow congratulations. You are doing so well! This is what I should have done instead of the one meal a day thing..I did lose a lot of weight, but it ruined my metabolism.

This system is supposed to help your metabolism. I started slow with 12 hours the first night, 14 hours the next two nights, and then 16 hours from then on. Even longer some days if I got busy. I think I went as long as 18 and 19 hours a couple of times.

First let me say...yay for you! it's awesome that you've had such success in the 4 weeks you've been doing the intermittent fasting. I'm a snacker at night too even if it's only something small. Rarely 9pm rolls are that I'm not looking for something sweet. I've been trying to eat less portions or none at all but it's a hard habit to break.

Yes, it's usually something sweet. Since I only have those 8 hours of time to eat, I eat my usual meals and add a couple of cookies to the mix so I still get my sweet fix, just not during the 16 hours of fast time.

@Marilynda1225 I still find myself hungry late at night but I don't wake up hungry in the morning. Hopefully that will go away soon.

Wow!! Congratulations! You have very well realised that consistency is the key. Keep it up. I do intermittent fasting from 7 PM to 9 AM. It has helped me with my sugar regulations.

Yes, the members of my household are inconsistent with meal times because of their work hours. So I found myself pushing my start time back and then having to wait longer after I woke in the morning. I didn't want to do anything until I ate, not even shower, so my day would start really late. I had to draw a line.

@arunima25 I haven't had good health for 25 years. Diet/weight has nothing to do with my fibromyalgia really. And because of my age arthritis is setting in.

@patgalca I think that's a good and wise decision on your part. Our health should be our priority. Only if we have a good health, we enjoy a good personal and professional life.

@MarieCoyle Yes, because I don't snack in the evening I do not wake up with stomach issues every morning. I'm loving that!

@patgalca Try having some food items in the house to have when you really, really want a snack. I keep popcorn, plain vanilla wafers, some dehydrated fruits, fresh fruits when I can. Also, I started off my weight loss journey by writing down what I ate every day for the last year. I don't have to do that anymore, as my little brain keeps a fairly accurate running total of how many calories I have consumed that day, I can't help it, it just sticks in your head after a while. I get full on a lot less than I used to. Your tummy will do that, too.

Great work! Now you need to make sure that the food you eat is according to a balanced diet. Keep up the great work and inspiring the rest of us!

It's true what they say that you think you're hungry when you're actually thirsty. I have been so thirsty in the evenings since I am not constantly snacking. Now I'm drinking a lot more water.

@lifecoachjerusalem I have a cup of tea for breakfast and then nothing but water all day. I have a 750ml. YETI which I drink about 3 of a day. Lately (because I'm trying to flush out an infection) I've been drinking 5 a day.

@patgalca Water should be the "go to" when people are thirsty, but many people insist on drinking Colas or Sugared Teas which add a lot more chemicals that are difficult for the liver and kidneys to process.

That's great that this plan is working so well. I sort of do the same but we are often still having tea at seven. I don't usually eat anything then till about 10 or 11am. It certainly helped me lose weight when I started doing this but now my weight is pretty stable and it is difficult to get it down any more. As long as it doesn't go up too much, I'm pretty happy.

I know I would regain the weight the second I started night time snacking... unless I made sure I limited myself to one small snack. But I won't be doing that anytime soon. I still have a long way to go.
