Myths About Mirrors

I have been collecting mirrors for many years. Some small ones and some large ones. Here are some interesting myths about them:
* The most common myth about mirrors is the one that says that if you break a mirror you will have seven years of bad luck. Experts say that you need to leave it for a while and then pick up each and every piece. Touch a fragment on a tombstone. This is supposed to take away the bad effects. One that doesn't break after it falls is said to be good luck.
* If two mirrors face each other it is said to set up a portal or dimension for spirits, to allow them to come and go. (I kind of like this one)
* It is a Jewish belief that until the body of a dead loved one is buried the soul of this person can get trapped in an uncovered mirror. Also, if someone sees a face in a mirror it is said to be a trapped soul.
Mostly I believe they are pretty and add something to the decor.

You forgot about vampires not being able to see themselves in the mirror, but that's two myths in one.
I don't collect mirrors but I like them too, they're like very realistic paintings that can change.

@sabtraversa I was going to say this. Do you know why?
Vampires and witches don’t have a reflection because they don’t have a soul.

Mirrors can make a space seem larger but, if you don't have room for them that could be a problem.

@RubyHawk .........I used to before we went through the Purge of 2014 when we had bed bugs. Got everything down off the walls. Now my mirrors are packed away. I need to either get them out again or sell them.

@celticeagle They can do that if you have only a few things on the walls. I have family pictures on my walls and my paintings.

I'm not someone who's into mirrors actually. I don't belief in superstitions and I have heard of the 7 years of bad luck when a mirror breaks. Haven't heard of any.

@toniganzon .......Oh, yes indeed. Mirrors need to be set strategically so you see them coming and going and it gives the illusion of more space.

I probably wouldn't be either but for the fact that I heard an interior decorator say one time that mirrors can make a space look bigger. Living in small apartments most of my adult life I like to have mirrors around to make the space look larger.

@celticeagle Yes, it does make the house appear bigger if you make one of the walls into a mirror. Not the tiny decorative mirrors but one whole wall.

I am always interested by myths and superstitions. About mirrors, at midnight on Halloween night, if you peel an apple in one continuous strip in front of a mirror, then toss the peel over your left shoulder with your right hand, your future husband will be revealed to you in the mirror.

@celticeagle For the Feng Shui is bad to have a mirror facing your bed. It depletes your energy that can result in sleeplessness.

I agree with one responder about spirits or vamps not being able to face the mirror. That's also another myth I've heard or read before.

I wonder if it was Bran Stoker who brought that myth to us.

There are faces in mirrors all the time, but thankfully they are usually our own.
Some of those myths were new to me.
