Not Too Old Yet!

Yes, I’m getting old. I’m drawing social security now, as well as my postal retirement. But I’m not “too” old yet! While in the Smokies I made a stop at one of my favorite places, Rocky Top Mountain Coaster. It’s a LONG (it has four ascents and descents) individually-operated “coaster”-type ride. You can make it go fast (the top speed, they state, is 30 MPH); or, if you’re a sissy, you can make it go a lot slower. I’m too old for the 30 MPH thing (although I do let it go full-throttle once on the ride), but I’m not too old (yet) to get on that sucker and enjoy the daylights out of it! One of the climbs has a great joke: a sign that says “does a bear pee in the woods?” And the next one with an arrow pointing toward a shack and the words, “You bet! Euro-pee’n bears.” As long as I’m not too old I’ll make a stop at Rocky Top Mountain Coaster every time I’m in the neighborhood! The photo is me kicking up my heels (or heel, singular) as I start the ride. And here’s a You Tube video of the entire ride:

Oh that’s not me in the video. Kudos to the place for having 80 feet marked out so you don’t have to guess if you’re 80 feet behind the person in front of you.

During the short time I lived in NH, there was an alpine slide ride on the slope of the ski area right behind the condo complex and I rode it often. This one was more like a concrete bobsled course instead of being on rails and if you lost control could suffer major skid burns.

They had those ride-a-concrete-drainage-ditch rides at Ober Gatlinburg a long time ago. I think they have the rail mountain coaster now, too. They’re very popular in the area. I think there are at least five of them in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area….meaning I must have missed one! I have to go back!!!!

@DWDavis — she might not ride it with you if you want to go fast and she doesn’t, but it’s perfectly safe for scaredy-cats and old folks…and even people with bad backs!

@FourWalls I am going to look for them the next time K and I make it out that way on one of our camping trips. I don't know if she will ride one, but I sure will.

I know there’ll come a time that I’ll have to quit. But, in the words of that John Hiatt song, it hasn’t happened yet! Hope you have fun on your vacation!

Oh it’s a blast, that’s for sure. Since you can control the speed you don’t have to worry about whiplash around the corners (unless you want it ).

@FourWalls BTW: watching the video of the ride was fun. I like the idea of "controlling" the speed yourself. After all, I'm a "fraidy cat."

Ohhhh, I'd totally go on that ! We went on a similar ride . . . during the summer we went to a skiing area . . . they had an "alpine slide" ride which was like bobsledding (more like a slide, not on a track). But this track one seems to be more like a "coaster". Weeeeeeeeee!

@FourWalls Looking at the video, it really is a long ride - and scenic too! That alpine ride's got nothing on this one !

Yes, this is a coaster. The “ski park” in Gatlinburg, Ober Gatlinburg, used to have one of the alpine slides, which was basically a cart in a concrete ditch. It was okay, but nothing like these!

I’m not feeling young today, but generally I agree. It takes a young mind to think I can still ride a bike.

This is billed as the longest coaster in the Smokies. I’ve ridden most of them (save for the ones that’ve opened since last March), so I can vouch for that!
