A sign of the times, I guess. As I told one exhibitor, this was my first trip to the Fair & Expo Center since before COVID. Or, on the other hand, maybe the late Tim Wilson’s assessment of “white people” (he was white) doing construction work (or not doing it) is true: “They say, ‘we’re covered up, we’ve got all we can do!’ Yeah, you’re covered up in Taco Bell wrappers!” Whatever the reason, the Home Remodeling Show was a real shell of its former self. Now, granted, I hadn’t been to it in eons, probably 15 years. But wow, was it small! And with an eight dollar admission fee at that! Fortunately, the ol’ military ID got me free admission. And, honestly, I’m glad it was free. Lots of mattress companies, pots and pans displays, dips and seasonings, and everyone’s #1 home remodeling necessity, make-up, were there. Actual construction necessities were few and far between. Mostly gutter guard-type products. Still, I was able to find a couple of roofing companies who can come over and give me an estimate on my ceiling issues (given that the first company I called is on day 13 of not returning my call ). I saw very few needs and even fewer wants. Oh, well, those are the breaks.

Did you at least ask how makeup can help in remodeling?

Heck, I already know the answer to that. You have to be beautiful when the plumber is telling you it’ll cost $14,000 to flush your pipes.

@FourWalls I was thinking it was so you could get a discount from the plumber.

My Mom and I used to do craft shows, and over time the "only handmade" rule was tossed out, so there were people selling things like computers and factory-made junk.

They used to have that rule on, was it Etsy? Now it’s all cheap crap bought in a dollar store and sold for $15 as “handmade.”

Did any of the pots and pans display melt sugar?

@FourWalls That seems to be a staple at these sorts of shows.

I didn’t check. Pots and pans are the least of my wants or needs right now.

I hope the roofers I contacted there pan out. Obviously those in the phone book (yes, we still get a phone book delivered every March) didn’t.

Over here, there is so much construction work available they don't have to bother about being prompt to reply to calls but 13 days is a bit much.

Even a “I’m sorry we can’t get back with you for 20-30 weeks” return call or e-mail would’ve been nice.

I'm sorry the show was such a disappointment. I was looking forward to lots of brochures from home remodeling folks. I guess it is a sign of the times. Maybe it will be better a few years down the road. Really cool sculpture.

They had some gorgeous furniture on display (all sculpted, not “manufactured”), too. Next year I’ll go to the hardly-promoted remodeling show (which is downtown at the convention center). I bet it’ll be better!

But the sculpture of the horse was a bonus. Years ago I was a frequent visitor to The Lawn, Home and Garden Show in Wichita, but it seemed to have some of the attrition you are describing. $8 is considered pretty reasonable around here these days.

If there had been anything there, I would say sure, eight bucks is reasonable. It was maybe a quarter of the size it used to be.

Many things are not what they used to be. Nice wood sculpture here.

It is quite pretty. I was amazed with the way the tables and chairs were made with the same uniqueness.
