Blocked for Asking a Tweeter for Citable Sources

I got into a thread on Twitter yesterday with someone who pointed out that horses are native to and originally evolved on the American continent. While having been taught that this was true, I had also been taught that the horse had become extinct in North America by the end of the last Ice Age. When I pointed this out, the guy got very nasty, called me all sorts of names, posted an opinion piece on the subject with not a single citation or link to any scientific, academic, or paleontological evidence, and finished by calling me an armchair expert, and told me I was an ignorant SOB when I asked him for a reliable, citable source of information. So, since I understand that new findings come along all the time that change what we thought to be true based on previously available information, something too many people in this world don't get, I researched it myself. Come to find out that, indeed, current archeological and paleontological findings suggest that the native horse was indeed still around in what became the western US right up until and past the time of the first European invaders. Having thus educated myself, and having read the article describing the peer-reviewed doctoral thesis of a Native American scholar on the subject, I attempted to inform my antagonist that I now realized I was initially incorrect and am now better informed. He'd blocked me. It seems some people cannot abide having their facts checked.

Some people can't stand to be challenged at all on anything. The minute you do, they turn all kinds of nasty. If you can't have a reasonable convo with somebody it isnt worth the time or trouble. The trouble is you don't know who is going to be reasonable, and who is going to act like an idiot.

Based on his post, it seemed as though he'd be willing to discuss and share his info and sources. I guess he considered himself to be such a stable genius that asking him for further information was an insult to his fragile ego.

Rumors suggest Twitter is full of loonies, I don't have any reliable source for that though. Siberia and Western North America were still joint during the Pleistocene (probably due to the Ice Age lowering the sea level), so the horses could have also moved back and forth. I wonder if this theory makes sense, too lazy to research right now.

Your theory actually corresponds to the findings of the most up-to-date research on the subject. That horses crossed from America to Asia during the Pleistocene is well accepted. That they didn't become extinct at the end of the Ice Age is what paleontologists are trying to determine.

That’s the sure sign of fake news: scream “WHAT?????? Your (sic) an idiot!” as soon as someone asks for a simple reference.

Usually, I would agree. In this case, the dude could have offered any number of credible sources backing up his claim but chose to act like a full-blown jerk instead.

The native population of horses in America being extinct since the end of the last ice age was long held to be fact based on available evidence. New finds now cast doubt on that belief. Depending on what you read, horses were still on the continent anywhere from 5,000 years ago until right up to the arrival of the Europeans.

So sad and unfortunate that people get offended for such petty things. This could have been an enlightening informative discussion if he was more receptive and not blocked you.

@DWDavis Yes. And a good healthy debate and discussion can be so enlightening. Nobody is a know-it-all. Such healthy discussions make us know and learn.

So this new finding is news to me, but that is okay. I know some breeds of horses came with the Spaniards and were either taken by the natives or escaped and were later captured, but that does not mean that is the only source of horses on our continent.

I had no idea the story of European invaders reintroducing horses to North America was even in question until today.

Sorry to hear you had such an experience. Such juvenile behavior. How interesting your findings are, however.

I think that person sound very antisocial to me, The point is to exchange information and if necessary in disagreement to recheck information as you did and to come to a mutual agreement and had nothing to do with blocking a person and being so rude,

Too true. A young mom friend kept on and on about how difficult it was to have her son wear a mask to school. How it impeded his breathing. How he rebelled at wearing it. I suggested that maybe her son (6 years old) was taking his cues from her….hmmmm…I was blocked. (I did it in a kindly way, and before she blocked me, several other young moms jumped on the bandwagon suggesting that I was making a valid point..

Tell the truth to some people who insult you since they do not do their research on the subject matter that you present them is par for the course.
