Depositing money into one's account

I got this idea from Marilyn's post on asking if we still write checks. I often wondered why when one deposits money into their account that they are charged. I understand why one is charged for depositing money but depositing is a good thing. I often wondered why we are charged for that? Do any of you wonder that too?

I think it is because the banks need to make some kind of profit ,pay staff etc. That's one of the reasons why they charge.

@Kandae11 Kandase, thank you for that answer and I believe it makes sense and that could be why they charge.

When depositing on your account there should be no bank charges. But when you transfer funds from one bank to another bank there will be charges for that. Paying Bills online thru banks as far as I know does not incur any charges from my end.

@Hannihar I see I do not know why they do that but I think they have a reason for that.

@rsa101 Here you are charged for everything. I deposited a check into my bank and was charged and did not know they put the dollar check somewhere else in my account and had to have it transferred in to where I wanted and was charged. Transferring you are charged where I bank and also depositing is also charged here. I prefer to pay bills at the post office rather than the bank. It is much more expensive to pay at the bank but you are also charged at the post office. That is how it is here.

From what I know our local banks don't charge when you deposit, only when you transact at a different bank's ATM. but only with a minimal fee. The deposits usually earn interest. Perhaps, you have availed of other services?

@Hannihar are you being charged to pay a bill? If that's the case you're not really depositing money but using that money to pay a bill. I can see where there might be a few for that. When you deposit money directly or thru direct deposits and the money sits in the bank without paying anything yet, are you still charged?

@Jenaisle No, I just deposit or pay the whole thing and am charged. When I paid at the bank I could see but when I paid at the post office I was still charged. I never will understand that.

@RubyHawk You are lucky Ruby. My bank does charge and I can understand for withdrawing money there is a charge but when deposit or pay the whole thing I feel like it is punishment.

@Bubba90 Yes, they do and I do not like that bank but we moved not too long ago and still dealing with things from the move and also other things come up so have not checked out other banks and also some of the banks you have to have so much in all the time and I am not sure I can do that. It is a pain switching banks and since we rent not sure how long we will be here where we live now.

@Hannihar Typically our checking accounts have a monthly fee for them, most have a fee waiver which means if you keep a specific amount in the account your monthly fee will be rebated. But as far as transactions are concerned, only money coming out is considered to be a transaction, not deposits.

@Juliaacv I am glad for you. I still have not found the right bank I want to switch to yet. Most when you start fresh you have to have so much in the account. I cannot afford to start all over again, but, will continue to look for the right bank.

We are charged to write checks and many banks charge when the debit card is used but we not charged for depositing. Are you sure about that?

@Hannihar here you get charged a monthly fee for maintenance unless you keep a minimum balance which I rarely ever do I also have money in a credit union and they don't charge a monthly fee but do they charge for writing checks just for using a debit card.

@MarshaMusselman Yes, I am charged for depositing, writing checks, and withdrawing money. Maybe things are done differently here than they are there. I have not found a bank yet that charges and someone told me about a bank but you have to keep a certain amount in it and not sure I can.

I think it is purely and simply so the banks can make more money out of us. They come up with all sorts of reasons to charge us.

In India, we are charged a fee (Rs 20 per Rs 1000) when we deposit money through cyber centers, probably service charge. However, when we deposit in the bank directly we are not charged. But who knows the bank might do it in a way we don't know.
