Summer vacation is laid down for some students in my country now. Some parents are complaining that their kids are becoming overuse using the modern gadgets. I am glad that my niece can still be controlled using her mobile phone. Regardless, I still encourage her to read novel books. I think it is a good way of parenting. What do you think about this, myLotters? Image Credit: images.saymedia-content.com

I love that picture. Children should not be spending all their available time online. First of all staring at a screen for hours on end is bad for one's health. Kids should spend some time outdoors, doing outdoor stuff - exercise too. Having said that , the only thing l can suggest is to lay down some strict rules.

I agree that we need to set limitations on them. It can never be wrong if we let them do some outdoor activities.

The problem is that people are using electronic gadgets as a babysitter now. The kids are used to having access to them any time they want them and the parents encourage that. The more the kids play online, the less the parents have to keep track of them. Even adults use gadgets more and more for their own entertainment. If I don't have something specific I need to do, I'm either reading a book on my phone or I'm talking on myLot.

I agree with you that some parents use them to babysit their kiddies nowadays. At some point, some of them let their kids watch on YouTube. I do not have a low opinion of those who are into mobile games.

@Shavkat I watch people playing video games online, too. As long as it's what people want to do and they can afford to live while doing things online, then I don't see a problem with it.

Take away the devices and send them outside to play. If it's raining, give them a book. Only allow them so many minutes a day on the electronics and then only if they have been active in other ways.

I also asked my niece to go out with her friends and play outside. I sometimes gave them some teen books and let them read. Then, they can discuss every after the chapter.

Since they are fully vaccinated now, it is time to go back to outdoor activities. Ball games are one of these.

Engage the kids into a variety of activities such as reading, swimming, playing badminton/basketball/football, hiking, playing musical instruments and they won't be online all the time.

These are good outdoor activities you mentioned. It would be great if they are available in the neighborhood. But then, I am still hopeful the young ones can go to these places for the new normal as they claimed.

I believe the adults are equally to be blamed when half of their children's childhood is seeing their parents engaged (glued) to their mobile phones or tablets or iPads. Look around and I am sure you can pick up the habit yourself too. Studies have revealed that the ideal age for them to be using these devices is after 9 years old but who heeded it. Now children are handed an old mobile phones instead of a lollipop or candy, television instead of playing games or taking them to a stroll or a sports event and an iPad instead of just having fun with a pet or toys. When my kids were young I would simply buy as much toys to play with them and television is only available for their Sesame Street if they are obedient and very responsive with tidiness of their desks and bedrooms. During their free time I would sign them up for swimming, basketball, martial arts and English classes to occupy their minds. So I think as adults and parents we have to be setting examples for our young futures.

My kids are addicted to mobile, especially social sites. They just see the videos people upload on Instagram. I have been feeling tough to get them rid of this addiction.

That's a good thing to consider. I also keep on telling my niece to refrain from watching rubbish videos on YouTube.

Well the world we live is now demanding everyone be online. It is sad to know that is all there is for them. The way to get them off of online world is not clear as they are surrounded by it. Everywhere, all the time.

I agree. We cannot deny the fact that most of us are into online activities. The adults' responsibility is to limit the usage of the Internet for the young ones.

I think kids need to be encouraged to have lots of other interests but I know it's not easy.

Children should have a limited time using their gadgets. Parents should encourage their children into some activities at home like playing outside like football, badminton, reading, swimming and so on.

I do agree that physical sports are needed for the young ones and be guided by the adults. Lately, I am encouraging my niece to read her novel book.

@thelme55 She is reading teen-level novel books. Fairy Tales are not to her taste now.

@Shavkat It is good that you encourage your niece to read a book. Start it with a fairy tales book.
