Sorry, country music haters. But let’s face it, we’re taking about booze here, so OF COURSE there’s going to be country music.
And with that fair warning here’s today’s tune with a mention of something distilled in the title.
#7: Tennessee Whiskey - David Allan Coe
This has been recorded three times in a major way (not to mention the covers). The most recent version is by Chris Stapleton. The “gold standard” version is by George Jones. And then there’s the first version, by outlaw singer David Allan Coe. That’s the version I’m going with here.
Why? It’s not that I prefer Coe over anyone else. Quite frankly, I’m not a big fan of his (although I love the song he wrote, “Would You Lay With Me [In a Field of Stone],” which was a hit for Tanya Tucker). But dang it pulled out all the Lefty Frizzell stops in his rendition! No, he’s not impersonating Frizzell, but there’s enough of a tribute in there that you can’t mistake it for a nod to anyone else.
And the song itself? Smooth at Tennessee whiskey!

I would imagine that, when you’re drunk, the fewer letters you need to spell something, the better. That’s probably why we dropped the “U” from words like “favor” and “rumor.”

@58lordstreet -- you do it correctly, whichever way you do it!

@FourWalls It is generally spelled “whiskey”—with an e—in the United States and Ireland. It is spelled “whisky”—without the e—in Scotland and Canada, which are both well known for their whisk(e)y, and in several other countries.
doesnt say how we do it in England lol

Yes, “Would You Lay With Me” is a fabulous song! And I remember the “controversy” over the song because Tanya was all of 15 when she recorded it. Now a four-year-old probably knows what that song is about.

@FourWalls Can you imagine our parents listening to some of today's songs? Now I don't know whether to put a 'laugh' or a 'cry'. I'll put both, just so I can stop dithering.

@JudyEv — they had bawdy songs (“party songs” they were politely called) since recording began. My parents had Rusty Warren albums (her best-known song being “Knockers Up”), but I was strictly prohibited from touching them, let alone listening to them. Now first graders would laugh at the notion of her being considered “dirty.”
I’d prefer to cry over it, myself.

And the county in Tennessee where it’s made is “dry,” meaning liquor can’t be sold there.

@DWDavis — ew, I need a penicillin shot just from watching that. Didn’t they have “off limits” places overseas? I know they had ‘em in Jacksonville, and that was my first job at NAS Jax: typing up Article 92 reports on people caught at the off-limits places (usually bars that, like that video, you needed medication just for passing it in a car).

@FourWalls There were off-limits places but most bars and clubs were not on the list. The S5 office kept a close watch on the clubs for STD rates, fights, and theft from GIs. Too much of any and the club would be placed off-limits. Most club owners were meticulous in staying "clean."

@FourWalls I spent an afternoon in a bar in Itaewon near Seoul when I was stationed in Korea and that was the only song they played. Itaewon was full of bars and other places that catered to the tastes of the GIs stationed at 8th Army HQ in Yongsan. I was actually stationed at Camp Hovey much closer to the border with North Korea.

I prefer Canadian whisky, or rye, as we call it.

It’s most famous by George Jones, although there’s a newer, recent version that’s been popular as well.

Never would’ve pegged you for the long-haired country boy (from Kentucky, no less!) type.
“You Should Probably Leave” is a good song.
