My Favorite Summertime Songs- #3

Summer means going to the beach for me and cooling off in the ocean. When I was younger, I would body surf the waves into shore. I never got the hang of surfboarding but enjoyed watching my big brother try to catch the perfect ride. And now that I'm "much" older, I'm still an interested spectator, watching those young guy's surf. Which brings me to today's summer playlist of my favorite surf tunes. As the Beach Boys would say, "Surf's Up!" Comments, musings, and your own trivia welcome... 1. The Surfaris- "Wipeout" -That's something a surfer never wants to do but often does, lol. An energetic tune with a catchy maniacal sounding laughs to begin the track, plus a mesmerizing drum solo you won't forget. This instrumental song came out in 1962 and became a #1 international hit! Every time I heard that song, I tried to tap along with the drummer but could never keep up. Give it a listen 2. The Chantays- "Pipeline" -Let's keep those surf-rock instrumentals coming with this one from 1963. Characterized by its unique sound. It was the groups only charting Billboard Top-40 hit. The title "Pipeline" refers to a term in surfing slang, in which a wave closes over the surfer's head while one rides across it horizontally. The surfer actually is inside a tube of water racing ahead of it to avoid having the wave crash on top of him. TRIVIA CHALLENGE ***Now for our trivia music challenge for those who like to play. It took "this group from California" to popularize this genre by "adding vocals" to it. The band consisted of "3 brothers, a cousin and high school friend." This song was the group's first major hit in 1962. The tune is about traveling to "different surfing hot spots" like "Malibu, Doheny State Beach, Rincon, and Laguna Beach," which were all mentioned in the lyrics. -Do you know this group and their song about going surfing? Bonus Trivia: A. That same California band recorded quite a few surfing themed songs in their early years. This tune is about celebrating and "doing" those good times over again." Getting together and looking back nostalgically at those days of "sun and surfing." In the song the singer speaks of going to the beach and seeing "suntanned bodies" of "California girls," "waves of sunshine," with a "beautiful coastline." -Can you name this song? B.
