Seems there is a little bit of prejudice

Day before yesterday I drove to Hillsboro (23 miles) for some particular things. I also wanted to go in the brand new shiny farm store.
I like farm stores--Orscheln, Tractor Supply, and others. Lots of good stuff. I had seen in their ad that I could get a good quality high protein cat food for half of what I pay per pound for Purina Cat Chow Complete at Wal Mart, or should I say I could get twice the cat food for the same price.
I looked at everything, and came to the pet food. Here is where the prejudice comes in. There were huge sections of things for dogs. Leashes, collars, dishes, grooming supplies, food and treats. Less than half the amount of goodies for cats.
There were even goat snacks, and Hog chow, and chicken scratch and wild birds seed in bulk. Home made, baked organic dog treats.Coat conditioner for sheep.
On farms dogs are more highly valued than cats, although farmers do like to have barn cats. Often barn cats are considered a disposable commodity. . . mostly feed themselves by catching rodents. No petting and pampering. No special grooming. Coyote kill them, that's okay, we can get more.
Tiny rant.
I did get my forty pounds of cat food. I think I will keep it in the deep freeze to keep fresh. After all, I am feeding four mouths. And I have a punch card. Once I buy ten bags I get one for free.Take that, Purina, Hills, and Iams. Wish they had had a decent size package of kitty treats.
Cats can be sensitive to dietary changes, so I got it in time to mix with the old food. Angel and Bitty have shown their approval..Lady and Tinker are outdoors right now. Likely protecting my property from rodents. They will eat their share.

There are about 10 million more cats in the US than dogs; so there should be more cat stuff than dog stuff.

There should at least be equal representation.

@GardenGerty I agree. Maybe dog stuff sells more at that store.

@LindaOHio Another user said she had asked and the Farm store said that they did not have enough business for cat food and items.

@wolfgirl569 Goats are popular here as well. Some sheep, but that is different. I need to rent a goat to clear my yard.

You mean the farm stores? I had never particularly looked. I knew about the various types of feed, and the Goat snacks did catch me a bit by surprise.. I did not notice any llama food, though and some ranchers consider llamas to be helpful additions to their open range.

@GardenGerty Yep farm stores. Our Rural King carries a llama food I think. Goats are very popular right now so they are going to get what they can from that.

Big, but not in the way of a Wal Mart. Not full of strange people. Mostly salt of the earth rural shoppers. Lots of useful stuff.

I am not sure. I know the dry food needs to be high protein, low in ash. I had some cats with health problems and I made food for them with chicken.

I thought maybe I was just being snarky I love farm stores and never thought to get my cat food there. It is much closer than any Wal Mart. I have gone to Dollar General and they are almost always out of what I need. I did get my bigger box of cat treats there, though.

@GardenGerty I have asked why they don't stock more and was told they don't have enough business. Oh well. I order most from Chewy anyway.

I'm sad for cats which are discriminated as far as their foods are concerned. Are rodents abundant in the place?

Farms and rural places often have lots of rodents. On my property, though, besides the cats I have birds like owls and hawks that catch the mice and rats and snakes as well. It does not bother me.

Cats lower your blood pressure and promote healing and relaxation. Dogs just make me hyper.

It's a shame there isn't much cat food, but that's still a bargain. So it's a win-win for you I suppose. I hope they adapt to the new food.

It was a worthwhile trip ! How long will the forty pounds of cat food last for four mouths ?

It probably will last three months. Not sure. With hot weather my cats are eating less. So I will keep it in the deep freeze to keep it fresh.

I had one where I used to live. I think I could buy cat food from a bulk bin there.

This is why the farm store does not sell more cat supplies. And there are no cat field trials and herding competitions, etc. They just keep the pests away.
