Crickets as Pets: What?!?

This evening, I am having a class with one of my students online. Out of nowhere, I heard a strong sound from an insect. I cannot figure it out which insect in this world is. So I asked my student if he is hearing it. Yes, teacher. It is a bug. I told him to kill it. My headphone is receiving the uncomfortable strong sounds from it. He noticed that I am starting to get irritated and said, "Teacher, it is my pet cricket." I caught off guard because he is showing it in a cage. Some of the Chinese kids pet them and even in Japan. Are you open to have a strange pet like crickets? Image Credit: mamalisa.com

When I was a kid, I was so fascinated and even catch some cicadas in the countryside before. As I looked at it, I might have one if find in the yard.

Hmmm, I would think so. However, if it makes him happy, he should have one.

As I perceived it, he was forced to have it by his grandpa.

Well, if crickets are considered to be pets, then we already have so many of them - all without names . They are free to roam (though we hope they stay outside) and can take care of themselves . But yah, they get noisy .

@Shavkat I have never seen BIG ones like your photo, but if anyone wants the much smaller ones, we have them here. Good idea to sell if there are buyers . . . I would definitely get rich .

Honestly, I got interested to have one. I had seen so many like this in our backyard before. If I just knew it, then I will catch and sell them.

Children sometimes enjoy having insects as pets but to me only some animals can become pets and those are limited to livestock, cats and dogs. I know some people have sheep, horses, goats and geese as pets.

Your old man meant well but it is never a good idea to entrust a pet to a child if that child is not interested.

When I was a kid, my old man brought so many pets for me to take good care of, such as a wild pig, roosters, hens, etc. I was so lazy to raise them at that time.

Not something I would want as a pet. Those crickets certainly are BIG

I was also surprised by how big they are. My student's cricket is also the same size.

You have a point. I, myself heard it and it was so loud. I suddenly remembered the movie Mulan. A cricket was in a cage literally. I thought it was only a grasshopper but it wasn't.

Weird pet to have. Lol. The student should've kept the cricket in another room while he was in class. That's disrespectful

@Shavkat The parents are also to be blamed. I don't think they would ever allow their child to take a cricket to school and the same principle should apply for online classes.

I agree that he needs to put his insect pet to another room.

Fany having a pet cricket. Was he able to put it further away once he'd shown it to you?

I also thought that way at first. Yes, he did show to me and managed to put me farther away from us. But still, the loud sound was still there.

@Shavkat I can believe it. The sound would carry quite some distance I'm sure.

I don’t think so. When I lived in the country the cricket were so loud it was hard to sleep. I’d rather have quiet.

@Shavkat I’ve never heard a cricket at my apartment and sometimes I’d like to hear just a few little chirps.
