Oh what a long day

Today was filled with paperwork, and phone conversations to support it. We made two different trips to the Counsel on Aging to have things faxed. The upshot of it all is that my sister will be approved for about $80 hrs. a month and she will be "self directed" meaning she gets to choose who works for her and what they do. She is also, hopefully, keeping the housekeeper from the home health agency. The plan is for me to provide some services. You know, I listen more to her about how she wants her pantry arranged and I can help keep some clutter off her counter tops and I will not throw away important notes that she has.. That is, after I fill out paperwork and have seven (7 !!) background checks to get hired by the company administrating the payments.. What this boils down to is when I come help her read her paperwork, go shopping or even just come sit and visit, I will be paid for my time. Otherwise she does not want me to come do stuff for her. Oh, and she has to fill out paperwork as well. Hers has to be mailed back. I will likely fill it out with her, because she is losing her vision. She wants to live on her own for as long as possible, and having someone come in and help will let her be able to do so. We faxed a total of 56 pages today. And that is the fact!

Oh my goodness. What a rigmarole and such a lot of work. They put a lot of effort into keeping people in their own homes here too. It actually costs less than having a person move to a nursing home.

She would not have a good quality of life in a nursing home. I have heard it is cheaper to live on a cruise ship than in a nursing home.

@GardenGerty I can just about believe it. Some nursing homes might be okay but most get a very bad rap.

Faxing 56 pages today is a huge workload.

Answering the questions on them first was even more difficult.

I hope she can continue living on her own for a long time. It is cheaper and better to live in your own house.

Yes, it is. As long as she can get what she needs and is comfortable with her surroundings.

I hope everything works out well for your sister. Letting her continue to live on her own as long as she is capable with minimal help is always the right way to go, in my opinion.

She never had had so much freedom until she moved into this apartment on her own. It has been fun to watch her get to select her own things.

It's nice you want to help your sister and being paid will help you too. That is a lot of paperwork! Seven background checks? They are thorough.

I'm glad you got so much accomplished. I hope everything works out. This is interesting to me since if my husband should pass (God forbid), I will need help to fix meals, help me dress, etc.

She gets both Medicare and Medicaid. Since getting a pacemaker she has been placed on a "frail elderely waiver" that is getting her that kind of support. The housekeeping is paid for by something called "the older American act" If you find yourself needing help check into local area agency on aging. I do not know what it is called throughout the states, but information should be available through a local Senior Center.

@GardenGerty Ours is the Council on Aging. We get Meals on Wheels through them. Housekeeping is done by my husband's second cousin. I've never heard of the frail elderly waiver. I never heard of housekeeping being paid by the older American Act. I will have to look into that. Thank you for the information.

It seems to be a procedure surrounded by red tape. There is a note of "business is business" in what your sister said -you should be paid for your time, otherwise she doesn't want you to help her.

It is a terrific amount of paperwork. I hope it goes smoothly and your sis can stay in her own place.

She will stay where she is as long as possible, by her choice. She did not know she was eligible for help until some of these agencies began working with her.

Seven background checks. That's crazy. It's good they are careful though.

You know, even with back ground checks you can get some crazies in.

If someone can come and help, the best option is to let your sister live on her own. She'll feel more comfortable.

She really likes where she lives. It is the first place she ever got to make all the choices on her own.
