So, the saga continues.
The guy that came in on Monday, I believe it was, of course did not return on Tuesday with his filled out application as promised. But he DID come in yesterday.
His paperwork was forwarded along with the other necessary information to our Dallas headquarters—but there was a problem. His driver's license is expired. Therefore, he has no "valid" ID. Something we need in order to be able to hire him.
He would have started today, but now he has to come up with another form of ID which will, at least, delay the hiring process unless he has something like a passport. But it appears he does not have another form.
Ugh.
Look, part of the problem we are having is not just that it's hard to find workers these days. The company offers no benefits. There is no 401k and while there are health benefits, you might as well just hand them back your paycheck.
Without these standard, modernized offerings, my company will continue to struggle to attract and retain quality people.

Government benefits are always among some of the best there are. Unfortunately it is all at taxpayer expense. But it is definitely a good benefit to have and one many people in the private sector would kill for. Especially since they pay the deductibles that government employees don't have to ultimately via their tax bills.

@NJChicaa I did not say you didn't. What I said is that your entire package is paid for by taxpayers and no one receives the benefits you do. Don't be ungrateful to the people who allow you to have these benefits—it makes us angry.
I am not saying you don't EARN it of course. Just that WE don't get what you get but we do have to pay for it.

@porwest Glad I wasn't the only one who went to that. If it's revoked would it effect his job? But even if it was revoked you can still go get a state issued ID card.

Our son is trying to find someone to share his house with but people just don't turn up when they say they are going to. It's very rude.

That's true. Companies these days are more concerned about documents than skills, hiring unskilled employees.

@porwest Their genuinity has to done through practical test. As sometimes their credentials do not match their skills. Company rules cannot be forced on them for they may not join.

No benefits? Bummer. I wouldn't want to work there either! Good luck in finding someone else.

I don’t think that’ll be a problem much longer. I’m reading about companies laying off — heck, Tesla is laying people off — which is to be expected when the vicious cycle of inflation-causes-economic slowdown happens.
However, when you’ve got places like McDonald’s or Wendy’s offering $500 bonuses as well as the benefits (health insurance, college tuition, 401k, etc.) you can’t compete with that unless you join the benefit parade. (For now. I worked for temp agencies that had no benefits when the economy was bad, but I was blessed because I had health insurance through the VA so all I needed was all they offered, which was a paycheck.)

There are many companies that offer incredible benefits, but provide sh*tty pay, and they also have a hard time attracting and retaining good employees. Companies need to wake up and realize they need to offer great pay AND great benefits. Otherwise, it’s going to continue to be a revolving door of employees coming and going.
