First, a huge THANK YOU to all of you for your expressions of sympathy over the sudden loss of one of our Putt Putt players yesterday. I appreciate it, and the other players do as well. They’re playing today in Monte’s memory, and we all know how he felt about the game so there was no question as to whether the tournament would take place today. Monte and I loved to discuss music while practicing, so today’s song from 1982 is dedicated to his memory. #8: Twilight Zone - Golden Earring Appropriate title for how yesterday felt, believe me. A few years ago I did a list of bands who were NOT one-hit wonders. Golden Earring has two “big hit” songs that get played to death on “classic rock.” One is this one. The other is 1974’s “Radar Love,” which doesn’t sound that much like this song. This song’s plot line was inspired by The Bourne Identity. The video has a feel of the classic TV show (so much so that you wonder where Rod Serling is, going, “Submitted for your approval” ). Put them together and you have a classic song that’s now 40 years old and still sounds great. Twilight Zone Written by George Kooymans Recorded by Golden Earring From Cut, 1982 (Today’s 1972 song: “Cotton Jenny”) This is a mad house:

No, I don't remember this one, either. I hope you the tournament was a success.

Thank you. They named it in Monte’s honor, so we’ll carry his name officially for a tournament as well as in our hearts. They did a sweet thing: put his name at the top of the scoreboard, with perfect 18s posted as his score for all four rounds. As for the song, who are you kidding.

@DaddyEvil — I don’t think there was any doubt it would happen, and I don’t think anyone had to even ask or suggest it. It was just the right thing to do.

@FourWalls At least you're getting me to listen to the songs once. That was very nice of them to do that. I'm sure all his friends appreciated the gesture.

Thank you. People muddled through. The photo of the winners on the group page showed the agony in their hearts after winning the tourney named in Monte’s memory.

Everyone grieves differently. Playing the game we love, and that he loved, helps in a little way. This was a bigger FM rock hit than AM (because it was so long) hit.

My condolences on the loss of your friend. I remember both of these songs well. I just heard "Radar Love" the other day and was wondering if Brenda Lee was ever a bit offended that he characterized a song of hers as "forgotten". Maybe she cursed them into near obscurity for a while! I liked "Twilight Zone" very much, though. It reminded me of how David Bowie did "Space Oddity" and then Peter Schilling (a true one-hit wonder) scored big with his continuation of Major Tom's story, "Coming Home".

Thanks for your kind words. They were right about “Coming on Strong.” It’s not well remembered. About the only Brenda Lee you can hear anymore is “I’m Sorry” and, during Christmas time, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” I happen to love “Coming on Strong” (and another one of her “forgotten songs,” “Johnny One Time”).

@AliCanary — it could mean either, to tell you the truth, which is part of the greatness of that line. But it really is a song…and a good one in my opinion.

@FourWalls my first thought is of "Fever" when I think of Brenda Lee. Here's the funny thing - I had no idea "Coming on Strong" was the song title - I thought he was just saying it was coming in clearly (relevant to a highway drive). Shows how forgotten it is, I guess!

I am, too. The pain is unbelievable, but inevitably something that Monte said or did on a hole will get everyone laughing and the healing process will begin.
