My apologies. It’s another country song. Well, country-ish. Heading back half a century, it’s time for another look at the music from 1972. This one holds a special place for me. And here it is! #8: Cotton Jenny - Anne Murray WHY they haven’t inducted Anne Murray into the Country Music Hall of Fame yet is beyond me. What, are they waiting for her to die? Or have another hit? The fact that this Canadian songbird has had hits in the US and in Canada, and all over the world, in both country AND pop speaks volumes to her worthiness. You may not know a single song of hers other than “Snowbird” (and you may only know that by name), but you know her. Okay, rant over. I’ve mentioned that a lot of my introduction to the great songwriting legend Gordon Lightfoot came through country music covers of his songs. This is one of them. While I prefer Lightfoot’s version (with the extra verse about the hot south “where they say ‘well shut my mouth’”), this was the first place I heard it. I’m still a fan of Lightfoot. And Murray. And this song. Cotton Jenny Written by Gordon Lightfoot Recorded by Anne Murray From Talk It Over in the Morning, 1972 (Today’s 1982 song: “Twilight Zone”) While the sun goes down:

I don’t remember this one getting a lot of airplay, but it was on her greatest hits album (Country) and I played the daylights out of that.

Yes, I agree! You can't top Gord's version, but this songbird does the song justice. Terrific lyrics and I sure would enjoy a foot rub from a Cotton Jenny

It’s a hard job to do a good cover of a great song. She certainly pulled it off!

Cotton Jenny? I thought she was singing about the clothing company Cotton Ginny...

It’s a clever play on words, and you have to give Lightfoot credit for that!

Not my favorite Lightfoot song, in spite of some excellent imagery. I don't really know her version.

I wouldn’t imagine you’d know many cover renditions of songs. You’re like me: more of a songwriter-oriented person. I wasn’t that way in 1972, though.

What a lovely voice she has - and a nice song to go with it.

I think that’s one thing that made her so popular: that amazing voice she has.
