It’s been a fun time looking back half a century at these songs throughout the month of July. I’m in the top five favorite hits from 1972 now. Here’s one that you couldn’t leave off a list like this, no matter how hard you tried.
#5: Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels) - Jim Croce
This means that it’s been almost 49 years now since we tragically lost Jim Croce in a small plane crash in Louisiana.
If you look at the output he gave us in his short time recording, you can only guess what he would’ve done.
This 45 is a great example. The B-side was the rollicking “Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy).” Then there’s song, a heartbreak about a man who lost his girl to “my best ol’ ex-friend Ray,” and is torn between trying to reconnect and forget.
It’s one of Croce’s best songs. It’s also one of the best one-two punch singles of the 70s.

@DaddyEvil — I like Elton John’s song “Step Into Christmas” any time of the year.
I guess you won’t hear an Elvis song in church. Oh, you might hear a song that Elvis recorded there, though.

@FourWalls You're welcome... I've really never paid attention to music unless it was to sing in church or when mom was singing while making dinner... Those songs I recognize and Pretty tells me I sing church songs while I'm asleep once in a while. Oh, and a very few Christmas songs that I sing during the summer to drive Pretty crazy! (She complains the most about the way I change Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!

One of my favorites is “Age,” but it wasn’t a hit. Not many know it.

I know. This coming Sunday (the 31st) is the 58th anniversary of Jim Reeves’ plane crash.
This is a terrific song.
