It’s been a lot of fun going back 50 years to some of these great songs, and I hope you’ve enjoyed the ride with me. Some of the music from any era sounds incredibly dated, but so many of these songs sound good today just as they did in 1972. Here’s another one of those songs.
#2: Garden Party - Rick Nelson
It’s a true story. Rick Nelson played at an “oldies” show at Madison Square Garden in October 1971 and he was booed for singing “a song about a honky tonk” (in his case, a country music version of “Honky Tonk Women”). The experience left him with a bad taste in his mouth, to the point where he proclaimed at the end of the song, “If memories are all I sang I’d rather drive a truck” (a reference to Elvis’ job before singing).
This became a big hit in pop and country, and assured that memories weren’t all Nelson had to sing for the rest of his life, which was cut short on New Year’s Eve 1985 in a plane crash. Memories are all we have.

You can't please everyone, but you can please yourself. I was not singing you were.

He was indeed. Really good looking in the Ozzie & Harriet days. Heck, even good looking when he was older. I saw a picture of Bobby Sherman the other day for his birthday, and he definitely hasn’t aged well.

@FourWalls I haven't seen or thought of Bobby Sherman in ages. It's funny how some celebs have aged so well and others not so much

It’s great that they appreciate their dad’s contributions to music instead of dismissing him.

Now,

who could forget this? Almost every garden party I ever attended had this song playing in my head even though he was referring to Madison Square Garden and what a giant garden that was

One of the classic “I’m mad so I’ll write a song about it” tunes.
