Jellyfish Stings

I was reading a response to a comment I had made on a discussion that Jim (@porwest, our very own financial guru and voice of conservative America) made regarding his recent vacation. He said the trip was great except for when he got stung by a jellyfish. That reminded me of a time right after I had graduated from the University of Florida about 117 years ago, when my brother and I decided to explore a shipwreck off the coast of Palm Beach in south Florida. The shipwreck was in shallow water about 100 meters offshore, so we were able to explore it with snorkel gear instead of scuba gear. Anyway, after about an hour of exploring the shipwreck, we decided to call it a day and head back to shore, but suddenly found ourselves surrounded by a swarm of jellyfish. As far as the eye could see were millions of jellyfish. I had no idea how we were going to make it back to shore. My brother came up with the idea of taking our fins off our feet and putting them on our hands, and then using our fins to push the jellyfish out of our way in front of us, slowly clearing a path a few feet at a time. It was a good plan, although it was very slow going, since we had to slowly and carefully push the jellyfish out of the way, swim forward a foot or two, then slowly do it over and over again as we made our way to shore. All while treading water. Everything was going great (although excruciatingly slow) until I got a bad leg cramp about halfway there. At that point I thought I was going to either a) drown; b) die from a hundred jellyfish stings; or c) both. Can you imagine how hard it is to tread water when you only have one good leg to use? Yeah, it was horrible. Yet somehow we finally made it back to shore, just as the sun was setting. It took us more than an hour to ease our way back to shore from the shipwreck in what should have been a 10 minute swim. And surprisingly, neither my brother nor I received a single sting from a jellyfish! In fact, in all my years growing up and living on the beach, I never once experienced a jellyfish sting. I can't say the same about Man-O-War, I've stepped on dozens of those throughout the years. Perhaps their sting is just as bad as a jellyfish? Have you ever been stung by a jellyfish? Btw...did you know that a swarm of jellyfish is called a bloom or a smack?

"I shall call him squishy and he will be my squishy." Never been stung by a Jellyfish no. Nearly got stung by a stingray though when I was feeding fish in Darwin when I was a little kid. Weird too they arent very common at all up that way theyre more common in Queensland

We’re taught at a very young age to do the “stingray shuffle” when walking in the water at the beach. That way you won’t step on one by accident.

I haven't. I remember as a little girl to be told stop messing with the ones that washed on shore. I was told someone would have to p** on the sting if it happened so you can bet I avoided them since.

It’s crazy that for many years experts said to pee on the sting to relieve the pain. Now they’re are saying that it only makes it worse!

Peeing works! @moffitjc I swear by it. The acid from the urine helps neutralise the sting. As long as the person peeing does not have any urine infection

@moffittjc So many old school remedies out there that could actually harm. Such as the butter on a burn.

@LindaOHio He said it wasn’t that bad, and only hurt for a couple of hours. I wonder how many adult beverages he had consumed during that time? Lol

@thislittlepennyearns Well, to be clear, I never got stung by a jellyfish so no one had to pee on my leg. Well, there was that one time a former girlfriend…oh never mind. That’s a story for another day!

I used to go to Gulf Shores and Pensacola often. Many times I got stung my jellyfish. Talk about pain. My bottoms came off for sure.

What did you do to treat the pain from the stings? It's crazy how most of my life we were always told that urine was the best thing for the stings, but now they are saying that it actually makes it worse. How could they have been so wrong for so many decades in their advice for sting relief? haha

@CarolDM Now Carol, how in the world did you let a jellyfish get INSIDE your bottoms? Was that just the excuse you used to do a striptease on the beach? LOL

@moffittjc Oh no I never LET him get inside. I tried to avoid them like the plague. My cousin had to get rid of her top many times. When they sting, you do what you have to do. Trust me.

I would have never thought to put the fins on my hands. My idea was to take deep breaths and swim underwater as far as we could, which was actually a dumb idea because we would have no way to surface for air without getting stung.

To this day I still don't know how the two of us managed to make it all the way back to shore without getting stung. I'm not kidding when I say there were millions of jellyfish. I have never seen so many before in my life (or that many since then).

Looking back now, I'm much more relieved that I got a leg cram and not a bunch of jellyfish stings. As much as the leg cramp hurt, I'm sure the jellyfish stings would have been much worse.

I was stung by a jellyfish when I was a teen at the Jersey shore. Never liked going in the water after that. Glad you and your brother made it through the bloom/smack without getting stung.

Sounds like trying to navigate your way through a minefield. That must have been a lot of jellyfish! Never had the displeasure of stepping on one. I do remember being at the NJ shore in August when there were many jelly fish pieces floating around in the water. Their occurrence seemed to coincide with the warmer water temps that time of year. Between the jellies and the seaweed, it made swimming an icky adventure

Here in Florida we have to contend with jellyfish, seaweed, sea lice and red tide (a toxic algae). I sometimes wonder if it’s ever safe to go in the water anymore.

@moffittjc Oh yes, red tide! Another menace. As the Beach Boys sang in song in 1971"Don't Go Near the Water." They were on to something even back then...

a Man-o-war *is* a type of jellyfish. We occasionally have them wash up around here. I am thankful to never have encountered one.

They’re all over the place down here, and you have to be super careful walking along the beach because they wash up on the sand with the incoming tide.
