Weird computer problems

A post by @TheHorse inspired me to write this. I’m not a computer whizz-kid at all, but most of the time I can manage to get the thing to do what I need. But every now and then I am stumped by something peculiar. Today's strange problem was with Word. I was working on a document and all was fine, until at a certain point I tried to write a phrase along the lines of 'this would be improved by adding extra data if possible'. It was all ok as far as ‘this would be improved by adding extra data if p’ but then as soon as I typed ‘o’ the entire page of text just vanished! Thank goodness for the ‘undo’ button! At first I thought I must have inadvertently pressed some other key by mistake. I tried again but exactly the same thing happened. So then I did it again, pressing each key very carefully and deliberately but no, it still had the same effect. After a couple more attempts I had to go and ask my in-house IT support person, and he tried it a couple of times too and got the exact same result. Finally we got around the problem by finding the word ‘possible’ elsewhere in the document, and copying and pasting it into the required position. That worked and all the subsequent text was fine from then on. But we still have no idea what was going on there! Any suggestions? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

The only time that's ever happened to me is when I'd typed so much that it went to a new page ..... your word app might be defunct.

There was no new page, it just zapped the final page (which I was working on) altogether and took me back to the previous one.

I have to agree with DE, I think you were in overtype mode in your selection.

@Fleura - Sometimes it's nothing of what we suppose, only a glitch of the system.

The problem has now gone away so I have no way of knowing whether you are right!

I have no idea, I'm just so much cyber roadkill on the information highway these days.

@Fleura Thanks. I don't know where I originally heard it, but at that time, I mostly knew what I was doing.

I have no idea. I have a new laptop I’m trying to learn to use. I’m using my iPad instead when I should do something with the laptop

Sometimes it takes a while to find out because every time, some little things that you had got all worked out, change to a different instruction!

Are you sure, your computer is not infected by viruses? What is your anti virus installed? For nati spyware you might want downloading "Super Anti Spyware" to remove spywares

Yes I have up-to-date anti-virus protection. Everything else is working normally, it just didn't like that particular letter 'o' for some reason. The others earlier in the same sentence were fine. And everything since has been OK too.

Could be a bug in word, or perhaps it thought a key was stuck. Often when that happens to me, it's because the alt or control keys are stuck. In which case those are common keyboard commands. Pressing the key again usually resolves the problem.

It was very odd, each time I pressed the 'o' in that position the entire page just vanished and it took me back to the previous page. Afterwards it was all fine again. No idea why!

Well, I have discovered that when problems corp up like suddenly the keyboard does not write on Word or something else strange occurs if I just restart my PC it all goes back to normal,

Turning it off and on again does seem to be the accepted solution to most problems!

Why not get a Microsoft representative on the line and let them walk you through the problem? Heh.

I'm sure someone from Microsoft will call before long to warn me about some glitch

No suggestions at all but sometimes computers are just weird. I've blessed (in a good way) the Undo button a time or two too.
