Wake up call

I don't know what to do. Nature is running its course. My siblings and I are no longer in the kiddo phase. I am the youngest and watching stuff happening. I called one of my sisters this afternoon. She is very special to me. She also can be weepy and has issues with reading and computers. So we were talking and suddenly she says: "I fell!" She had listened to my tales and suddenly broke the news. She was on the floor of her apartment!! She has at least one artifical knee and a bad back etc. So there she was. Maybe over night?? She lives in a low income apartment so there were people left and right of her. I don't know why she couldn't get to a wall and bang like crazy. She has to get a phone that she can really use. Sister's daughter lives maybe half an hour away. My other sister lives about an hour away. Something is going to have to happen. I did find out that daughter finally was reached and sister was taken to Urgent Care. No broken bones. Thank God. She would hate to have to wear one of those contact somebody!! buttons but I think she should. Stuff like this makes a person think about contact chains. Who is available if God Forbid happens?? Can you make your phone work? Hubby is thinking about talking to the lady who cleans our house. And now walks with our dogs. Maybe she is somebody who could look in on us every once in a while. At least she is here twice a month. Thoughts swirling in my brain tonight for sure. Age sure is not for sissies.

Somewhere along the line your sister needs to relent and get a panic button. I realize it is demoralizing, but it could save her life. I know that I had a heck of a time when the scooter fell over on my ankle and broke the ankle in 3 places. I had a heck of a time opening the seat and getting my cell phone out. Then I was praying that it would work in the area I was in. A panic button would have been much easier, but I am a determined person and managed to get to my cell phone and get help. There comes a time where you need to decide if "Pride" outshines a need for "Help". A panic button would be easier for her because all she needs to do is push the button, where a phone you need to do a lot of dialing.

@sallypup What's funny about the accident is that I didn't lose my cool or become terrified. I managed to get the phone out and call for help. I was fine until the forestry man told me I fell into poison oak, then I got a bit upset. It took three weeks for the poison oak to heal. I did learn that as much as I love scooters and motorcycles, I need to stay with a car.

I heard of a lady who fell in her bathtub and was there overnight.

@Kandae11 That sounds like a horror novel. I can't imagine being in a tub over night. The bathroom is one of the most dangerous places.

I agree. Old age is not for sissies. Your sisters are lucky to have you checking in on them. Hopefully your sister's daughter will start checking more often to make sure her mom is okay.

I agree with you. I have been thinking lately about selling my house and renting a small apartment nearer Claudia and Dixie.

I'm glad your sister is okay. But yes, it does sound like she needs one of the "panic" buttons that she wears so she can call for help if something like that happens again. My mom wore one but wouldn't use it. The police called me a couple of times when they found her lying on the ground outside her house after she fell in the yard.

@DaddyEvil How terribly scary for your Mom and about your Mom. My Mom had a panic button but was having too many dementia issues to know to use it.

@sallypup Yeah... mom kept telling the police that she'd be okay while still not able to get up. You can't make them use the panic buttons if they don't want to use them.

A lifeline button would be very important in her case. I think my parents need to have something like that.

Glad she finally got help. Those fall buttons to me would not be that bad. Talk to her about that.

I’m so sorry for her. I think she really needs a device that will call for help or someone to call or check in with her daily.

I'm sorry to hear about your sister. She definitely needs one of those gadgets. If something were to happen to my husband, I would get one since there's really no one to check on me.

@LindaOhio I'm like you. I rely on my hubby. Now that we have two stories of house and his hearing is worse, I may have to figure out a better system.

It does sound like your sister might need one of those alert buttons you wear around your neck on a chain. I am lucky to have my family all around me should I fall and have a hard time getting back up.

It’s a good idea to have someone looking in often and someone you can call if needed.
