Wonder If People Still Do It?

United States

Years ago, when I lived in California, people would have freezers, and would order meat, and have it filled once a year. But, since I've moved here, freezers are filled, but mostly with food from the garden. I was told years ago that this would help with food costs. I am sure it does. I do still see companies that advertise this, but I was just wondering if this is still an option people use to save money. Have you ever did this, or even thought about it?

When I find it on sale, that's what I try to do.

@popciclecold This is what I do, the local grocery stores sometimes sell fish and meat up to 50% discount, this is when I buy.

I would have loved to do that but have no freezer.

I have one and it is pretty full. I try not to empty it, because you never know about being trapped inside.

In the past my fridge was not very full. But the pandemic has changed everything. I always fill up my fridge in case of any accidents we can't go out and we have to stay at home. At least I must make sure I have enough food at home.

I have no idea why when I read Do It in the title, I thought Birds Do It, Bees Do It, Even Educated Fleas Do It. Anyway, I don't have the luxury nor a large sized family to be able to have a freezer. Are the freezers kept out on the carports out there? When my sister lived in Riverside decades ago, her washer and dryer were on the carport.

Sometimes they keep them outside, but now they lock them.

When I was a kid we had a separate freezer, and I remember my parents going to a meat shop and getting a lot of beef. The old “wrapped in white paper” scenes in old TV shows was right there in our house!

We still freeze meat but only buy relatively small amounts at a time. I'm not fussed about keeping things in a freezer for long periods of time.

I've thought of buying a freezer many times but since I am alone and do not eat red meat I would only fill it with chicken thighs and frozen veggies and fruit, even a whole chicken is too much for me. One of my friends has one of those huge upright freezers that is bigger than their refrigerator but there are only 2 of them and I have to wonder why they'd need something that big.

My friend that use to do this, there were three of them. I know it would be too much for us. Two of us.

We have 2 freezers. It lets me buy extra when there is a good sale. Also hubby sometimes hunts and then we have room for the meat.

I would do this if I would have enough room in the freezer.
