A lie detector and the Indian court of law.

The accused or a criminal seldom tells the truth, especially when the victim is dead or murdered. In India the accused is therefore passed through the lie detection test by the police. However, the results of the lie detector are still not accepted by the Indian court of law, just because it is a stream of questions which the accused has just to answer with a ' yes' or a 'no'. Recently a young woman of 23 burnt her husband to death and just kept on saying she didn't know how her husband died, though both she and her husband were the only people in the house and the time of her husband's death. The police was therefore forced to pass her through a lie detector. They found that the woman lied about the whole incident. Now if the court doesn't give Importance to the polices' findings, her dead husband and his family would never get justice. I think the Indian court should give Importance to lie detection test as the accused cannot manipulate the report.

As far as I know here, lie detectors are deemed unreliable and are technically not suitable as evidence here in this country. I could be wrong. But then we know the case you have stated here is obviously she is guilty. Yes a skilled liar can pass the lie detector test as well.

@jobelbojel A murderer will never admit that he/she has killed and so there should be some process to know the truth. Countries used this machinery for terrorists and dons who never speak the truth.

Don't know what to say but lie detectors should be given a weightage while giving a judgment.

They should be given weightage when interrogation don't work. Some criminals are too clever.

For me, Lie detector shouldn't be used as a validation during the police questioning. The police can use it maybe but court should not accept it as a means.

I think when a criminal is an expert liar this device should be used.

The US courts do accept lie detector evidence... The problem is that some people can still lie while hooked to a lie detector and get away with it.

@aninditasen As long as law enforcement KNOWS it can be wrong so they don't depend on it, it's okay as a help in law enforcement.

@DaddyEvil Yes, it should be used to enforce law which is not done in the Indian court of law.

I have seen terrorists speaking out the truth with a lie detector. So invariably it helps a lot.

I don't know how the lie detector determines whether the suspect is telling a lie or the truth.

There are buttons that are attached close to the brain/head of the accused and the reaction of the accused is recorded through yes or no after so set questions are put to the accused.

To me lie detector test results should be givwn importance specially if it can solve a henious crime . I am not sure though if lie detector machines can be manipulated or can be altered but it is of good help to human lives these days.

I too think a lie detector should be given importance. Manipulating a lie detector is not that easy.

@aninditasen I believe so too. Because here in my country when ever a big investigation is in process they give a big chance in using a lie detector machines followed up by its result .

@iKONICNoona That's right because sometimes deadly criminals just don't admit the truth.

The police in India too give importance to lie detection and the basis of it the Assistant Police Commissioner of Odisha sentenced the woman to two years imprisonment or else she was going scot free.
