“A Whiter Shade of Pale” is a song by the English rock band Procol Harum and issued as their debut record on May 12, 1967. The song went to number one on the UK Singles chart and also made it on the Billboard Host 100 chart in the US. The song has become an enduring classic and has over 1,000 known cover versions. The song has a Bach-derived instrumental melody, soulful vocals, and unusual lyrics. It was composed by Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher with lyrics by Keith Reid. The song was named joint winner of The Best British Pop Single 1952 – 1977 along with “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. It is at number 57 on the Rolling Stone magazine list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
