An honor to play the national anthem

For the homecoming game my sons band teacher wanted him to play the national anthem alone and put his own flare on it.
Instead of taking it as an honor that they felt he is good enough at playing the guitar and base to do that he was anything but happy.
For quite a few years he has mentioned that with it is such an important song and that it’s not about them. It’s not their own song they shouldn’t be changing it up. He feels like it’s a disgrace to the song.
Also he said he would be to nervous to play that song on his own without the rest of the band in case he made a mistake. He didn’t want to ruin such an important song.
I told him I understood his thinking but that it truly is such an honor what he was asked to do. I told him to just nicely explain to his teacher how he felt about it.
He did tell his teacher and he must have been fine with it. He said one of the other teachers suggested it to his band teacher.
He’s had a busy weekend playing music. Friday was a powder puff football game and pep rally he had to play at. Followed by a parade and bonfire both of which he had to play at. Today was the homecoming game he again had to play at. Finally he is getting to relax and decided he was going to go to the dance. He’s never been to one before and was nervous when he left but I’m hoping he has fun. He has really started to come out of his shell this year!
I wanted to post a neat photo of a wooden American flag I saw was decorating the store where my daughter works but when I went recently it had been take down so I just chose to take a photo of this totally unrelated item instead to share.

@sickley09 thank you. It’s been a busy but good one. We are going to my father and mother in laws for a birthday celebration for him today. Not sure how old he is turning but I made a fruit platter for it.

Wow so your son must be a good musician! So what happened...did he play the anthem alone or with backup?

@oahuwriter he is amazing and he is self taught. He really has a gift!
He didn’t have to play it since he didn’t want to.

It is an honor, but I understand your son being nervous too. That is a nice case with lots of jewlery.

@snowy22315 I couldn’t do any of the public things he does. He was such a scared kid it’s so amazing he is able to play his music in public the way he does.
I’d love to make a case like that! You should see the neat shelves they made out of suitcases. Next time I go I’ll try to remember to take a photo of them.

@RasmaSandra the baby was semi fussy but it’s always nice to get together with family. His sister made a lasagna that was half meatless and it was so good.

Does anyone play the national anthem alone? If there is, then it's an honor for him indeed to play once again alone.

@Nakitakona someone usually sings it but the band teacher wanted my son to play it by himself and put his own creativity to it but my son didn’t want to and they teacher was okay with it.

That is a cool item though I love it.
Your son is so consciences Shanny and a very wise fellow he is.
What is a powder puff football game? I am not familiar.

@RebeccasFarm it is neat I’d love to create something like this.
My son thinks about things very deeply.
The powder puff football game is when the junior girls compete against the senior girls in a football game and the junior and senior boys cheerlead for them.

@Tampa_girl7 he found it pretty boring but at least he went and gave it a try. I’m so proud of him. There’s no way I could have walked alone like that into a dance at his age. I doubt I could even do it now. I’m terribly shy.
