Have you heard of the Packhorse Library?

I recently finished reading ‘The Giver of Stars’ by Jojo Moyes. Although fictional, it is based on fact, specifically the Pack Horse Library Project, a program instigated by a Works Progress Administration and designed to deliver books to remote regions in the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky, USA. The project ran between 1935 and 19443 and eventually had 30 different libraries serving 100,000 people. The books were delivered by women, mostly, on horseback. The terrain and weather were very challenging indeed but there was a great demand for the service. The books were delivered to individuals and to schoolhouses. Occasionally, a ‘librarian’ would spend time reading to a person. The books were donated but counties had to provide storage for the books and had to cope with the administrative tasks involved in the running of the library. The Wikipedia article on this subject is worth reading. Moyes’ book is also worth reading and gives an insight into the harsh lives led by those in the Appalachians. It also deals with the attitudes of the people towards religion, education and the position of women. The photo is mine and I’ve taken the opportunity to show you some more of the endurance riders.

I have The Giver Of Stars by JoJo Moyes. I haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to it. My ancestors came from the Appalachians and we live close to the end of it. They were an isolated people at that time.

Reading a key to education and that is a great leveler, which is why I think some political groups spend so much time and effort restricting what is read and taught in schools. Projects like this are still vital today.

@Ronrybs I must say I haven't noticed it so much in Australia. I can't think of any books at all that have been banned.

That's so true. The book goes into the how the 'gentry' of the town tried to dictate what could and couldn't be handed out to be read.

I had two books by her on my bookshelf but I was so bored by the former two or three books I had of hers that I had read that I didn’t bother to read the last two and donated them. Let’s hope it wasn’t The giver of stars as that sounds like one I would really like.

@JudyEv The one was a movie too about a parapalegic. I didn’t care much for the movie either but it was mostly I didn’t like the overly smileyness of the actress.

I've read about four of hers now and enjoyed them all. I'm a bit surprised they bored you but from time to time she gets carried away a little.

The book seems like something worthy of a reading. For a Fiction lover like me, it might not be the first in the list. Yet, it could be something that I could look forward to after some time.

@JudyEv Oh I now read "Although Fictional" now. I was probably in a Fast Fingers Mode!! And that reminds me of a response I gave to one of Coral (Sojourner)'s post a few days back when I was getting sleepy. I wrote something really junk and unrelated to the topic, said sorry to her later and corrected it It is best to stop Mylotting when one is feeling sleepy!

The book is a fictional story about the library. I might have given the wrong impression.

@JudyEv Loads of books on the shelf which were once upon a time valuable are now languishing. Talking of books we have dictionaries galore but who wants them now

Yes, I just read The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek, that was about that very thing. She had the added difficulty of having blue skin, as some natives of the region have.

@JudyEv I my job people think it’s nice to give a Bible to me as a gift - just how many bibles does a boy need? They all say the same thing.

Some of the people there were very bigoted and fussy about what books they allowed in their homes. Bibles were among the most requested.

Dolly Parton’s “Imagination Library” is sort of expanding on that idea. The people in eastern Kentucky (and eastern Tennessee, where Dolly’s from) have known nothing but hardships for ages. I’ve been to Loretta Lynn’s birthplace in Butcher Holler, and believe me, it’s way back in the hollers. Literacy has always been an issue there, too. I didn’t know someone had written a book about it. That’s incredibly cool. And Jojo Moyes is British, so that makes it even more cool!
