On my way to the Attendant Cafe, which I wrote about in my last article, I passed Riding House Street and this was one of those names that caught my attention and I do like finding out about London street names. My usual sources of information on London street names were mute, but Wikipedia informs that it has been there since at least the early part of the 18th century, when it was known as Riding House Lane. The name derives from the barracks and riding house of the House Grenadier Guards. I guess Riding House was another way of saying stables. I had read of the Horse Grenadier Guards in a novel and thought it was an invented regiment for the story, but it turns out they were a real military unit. You learn something everyday! I shall have to take a closer look next time, as it has couple of pubs and a cafe to be sampled.

I often research to know the reason behind the name of a road. I know that the name of the road where we live (Fontanella - small fountain) comes from the fact that there was a fresh water source here in the past.

@Ronrybs It is interesting to know. Many times the names are after important people.

@LadyDuck Yes, that happens a lot. To me, not quite as exciting as Watling Street, the old Roman road out of London

This is the kind of thing I like finding out about. Once you find out the story behind a name you can spot it elsewhere

There seems to be so many regiments there. When they have the Trooping The Colour, it's all a bit mind-boggling.

Yes, considering the size of the population it is a wonder they could keep all those regiments up to strength!

Oh yes Ron, I am not sure how or when I knew of them, but the Horse Grenadiers were real Can you imagine how grand they must have been. I love the London streets, lanes, alleys names.

It is worth looking at even the most mundane names as they have changed in recent times and the original name has been lost, which told its own story

That is an unusual name for a street. I too would have been interested in finding out how it got its name.

After thinking about it for a while, I wonder if a riding house is like an indoor arena riding school. Lots of room and a soft surface for the horse's hoofs
