My student gets vision services for about two hours a month from a contracted specialist. We are trying to facilitate communication, so often there is a matter of choices. At recess we gave him the choice of going outside, or to the PT room which is where he has some toys and a spot to rest. He chose the icon for the PT room and enjoyed laying on the mini trampoline and getting blocks off the shelf. Ms. Eyeball, as I refer to her for my kid even showed me how to play tic tac toe with him. Many people do not believe he knows as much as he does. We are getting there, though. Building relationships facilitates learning.

You are doing such a great thing with these children. Not everybody can do this.

I did not necessarily plan to do this kind of work, but I have always been the type that believes we can do more, or they can do more, than we expected to.

We need to have people believing and practicing with him so that he learns to communicate what he wants.

For this student, school is a happy place to be, because people believe he can do things and encourage him to try.

He has trouble with his vision, too? I agree. A child needs to bond before all else.

He has what is called "cortical vision impairment". His eyes are healthy and can do all that eyes need to do, but there is a switch in his brain, kind of like a short circuit, thatj causes his vision to kind of switch off. He has to practice working around that problem.
