Everything is always bigger and better!

Little One has a schoolfriend (let’s call her Millie) who is a compulsive bragger. We don’t see her very often but a few times Little One has invited her to her birthday party and then we couldn’t help but notice that everything that was mentioned, Millie’s was always bigger, better and more expensive than everyone else’s (according to herself). Once we’d cottoned on to this of course we couldn’t stop noticing it and now every time we see her we almost start laughing in anticipation. Luckily as I said we don’t see her too often. But shortly Little One and all her school year are off for a week’s residential adventure, and there is much excitement over the preparation for this. All the children have been given a list of things to bring, and this includes a sheet and duvet cover. Today apparently Millie was telling the others that this was going to be a problem; her duvet cover wouldn’t fit the beds as she has a double bed at home. Honestly I’m surprised she doesn’t say she has a four-poster bed with velvet curtains and a crown on top! Surely her parents must have a spare duvet cover somewhere. Or if not they can go out and buy a really expensive brand new one no doubt! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

I have met some adults that brag just as much as Millie. They can be hard to put up with.

Sure can. You just have to see the funny side (as in many things in life, I find!)

That kind of stuff is often learned from others.

Yes I think it's from her mother, sadly I guess it will get passed on to the next generation.

That would annoy me... *shrug* and then I'd ignore her.

@Fleura Well, younger kids just can't help doing things like that.

Now that we've noticed it's just too funny, we are just waiting for her to do it

Hopefully Millie will outgrow this rude habit and/or realize that her peers are annoyed by her constant bragging! How old are Little One and "Millie"?

Unfortunately modern society seems to prefer those who push themselves forward over the modest ones.

Yes, very irritating, unless you see the funny side. Now I find it hard not to start laughing before she has even said anything, because I am expecting it!

I cannot stand those people. Most of the time it is a psychological problem, an inferiority complex.

You can either get irritated by this sort of thing (or even envious) or you can see the funny side. If I had to see much of her I know I wouldn't be able to resist asking her for more details!

Maybe her parents have a perfectly suitable duvet but Millie is putting on her act. As you say, once you notice anything like this, it starts jumping out at you, like people who say 'you know' at least once in every sentence. You know??

Exactly, now that we've noticed it we are waiting for her to tell everyone that her **(insert topic of conversation here) is much bigger and cost more than all the others. Honestly I find it hard to keep a straight face

Sadly, I know adults who do the same thing, always trying to outdo everyone else. It’s good that your Little One doesn’t let Millie’s bragging bother her.

Little One isn't bothered, we talked about how some people feel the need to show off and how modern society encourages it (just look at 'the rich kids of Instagram'!) when modesty and humility used to be considered virtues. We all laugh about it together. I do worry though that other kids may feel inadequate in her presence and become envious, which would be a shame.
