Cereal post #3: Testing an older stereo receiver.

I just took this photo. It is of a 1971 Sherwood S-7100A that I own. I've owned it for several years. I can't even remember where I got it, but I think it may have been sent to me by a fella in Texas in thanks for some speaker restoration work I did for him. He had paid me for the work--it was a special gesture. The receiver retailed fr $199.99 in 1971. I don't know what that would be in today's dollars . In any case, one of my fancier stereo components (a McIntosh tuner-preamplifier) in on the blink, so I am hoping to drop this one in if I can get it back up to speed. Right now I am spraying several controls with De-Oxit (contact cleaner), working the controls, and am about to test it out on AM and then FM with my headphones. Wish me luck!

@DaddyEvil I don't fiddle that much with the insides unless the thing is unplugged.

The Sherwood checks out fine. Now I'm on a roll and am testing out other components.

I've made an evening of it. The Sherwood 7100A tests out fine. My older Fisher tube integrated amplifier still has problems that I can't fix. My usually dependent '70s Pioneer TX-6500II back-up tuner won't power up. But my NAD back-up tuner does. I guess I'm on a roll. I still have a few other units to test tomorrow and possibly fix (if I can do it with contact cleaner and voodoo).

@RubyHawk Heh. Those, and decent problem-solving skills, are my only weapons.

I think that would be cool if it still works after all this time.

I fixed it up about ten years ago, and again a year ago. It works fine now, after a little De-Oxit to quiet the controls. They tend to get scratchy after awhile.

Hook up some good speakers to that and blast your neighbors out of their apartments with “Crooked Piece of Time.”

Yikes. I'll have to check that one out as well. I have everything disconnected right now. I just took a short cyle in the dark to relax a bit. Is that Jupiter I see rising up and to the right of the moon? (I guess you could say slightly Southwest of the rising moon.) I'll have to check.

I don't think it is going to work.

It works fine through headphones. Even the lights work. But I still have to test it with speakers. Now I am working on some other components.

Thanks. It works perfectly so far. A little De-Oxit can work wonders.

I got this one up and running! Now I'm turning my attention to some other old stereo gear I have around here.

Those things were a lot more expensive 50 years ago than in our days. To have actual dollars from 1970 multiply x 6.1. This would cost now 1,220 actual dollars.

Good luck! Hopefully all your previous experiences with speakers will help you get this going again.
