A little bit of colour

We are busy concocting a wine rack for our storage room. I’ll talk more about it when it’s finished. But while we were at our hardware store, I bought some seedlings to put in some empty pots. The neighbour had marigolds in containers last year and I thought they were very bright and cheery so I bought a punnet of those and a punnet of petunias. I also bought a butternut pumpkin seedling and six watermelon seedlings as the latter weren’t available as singles. The pumpkin and watermelon will over-run the tiny patch we have but they have to survive first. So that’s my job for today. Vince is off to a luncheon for retired bursars. He’ll meet a lot of old friends there. He is catching a bus and train there and back but it’s all pretty simple as long as he doesn’t go to sleep on the train on the way home and go past his stop.

Would you go rescue him if he missed his stop or would you make him hoof it home on his own?

@JudyEv Well, that's not nearly as much fun.

@DaddyEvil If he sleeps past the stop, then he needs to learn the lesson.

I am looking at the marigolds of my neighbor and I know that next year I will plant those flowers.

@JudyEv It seems that those flowers also protect the vegetables from some pests.

I love marigolds. They are so happy and cheery. Do you grow pumpkin and watermelon yearly? How big do they get?

@JudyEv You have to watch them, they will go over to your neighbours! Most years I have to pull pumpkins out of the hedge between us and next door. One year I even had to sneak into their garden to head off the vines

I've grown pumpkin before but not watermelon. They might find it hard here as there is so little space but I'm hoping they won't mind going round and round and up and over themselves.

It's amazing that one tiny plant can have such a big flower. We have a 75th birthday party to go to shortly. We've been at the clubhouse helping them set up.

@JudyEv Our city plants marigolds all over the city. They look so nice when they are all bloomed.

Until we moved here we didn't regularly catch the train. A bursar is a fancy name for a business administrator in a school.

The marigolds are beautiful. My backache stops me from gardening now. So I avoid gardening though I want to.

Can you grow a few things in pots? I can't do much gardening but I have very little room now.

I think marigolds are supposed to help keep aphids away too. Have you heard that?

@CarolDM Mum would plant sunflowers around the apple trees hoping the parrots would eat the sunflowers instead of the apples.

@JudyEv Yes, they have a scent that keeps deer away as well. Many plant them around their gardens here for that reason.

Since pumpkins and watermelons grow on vines, you could train them to go up a sturdy trellis. Alternately, you could share half the seedlings with neighbors.

I'm hoping to find a neighbour that might want a couple. The trellis is a good idea.
