The last meal

I read a report about a convict in the US who was asked to choose food worth US $25 as his last meal before hanging, he went for his favourite food and finished every bit of it. What confuses me is how anyone can eat knowing he will be hanged. When I get upset for whatever reason the first casualty is my appetite. Not just food I cannot even apply my mind to anything. Do you also lose your appetite or lose interest in doing anything when you are upset? Here is what Wikipedia says about 'why the last meal' “In Ancient Greece, you had to feed the person who was going to be executed, so that they could cross the River Styx into the underworld, and not come back as a hungry ghost" And the tradition continues!!!

How can these convicts eat is a question that needs an answer (lol) When was the last time that happened to you I had lost the mother cat and her kids a few months ago and that is when I was disturbed.

That's an interesting story about "the last meal". Here, we have the goddess of forgetfulness in Chinese mythology, who serves Soup on the Bridge of Forgetfulness. This soup wipes the memory of the person so they can reincarnate into the next life without the burdens of the previous life.

So that explains why most people have no memories of their previous lives!

I believe since these people have a lot of time to think and know they are going to die, they condition their mind to eat.

@RebeccasFarm With the kind of mind set that presents itself after being in jail for years I suppose that would be possible.

I guess some people come to terms with the fact that they are shortly to die. I think I might lose my appetite too.

I have not heard of this, but Jesus Christ enjoyed a last supper with his disciples, before he was crucified. I have heard of last words, though. Both Zen masters and convicts have given famous last words. Ned Kelly, a bushranger criminal here, last words were, "Such is life."

Jesus was not a criminal and the meal was organised by Him and not the Government of those days

@innertalks This action of Jesus cannot be compared with the convicts' last meal

I have heard about the convict being given a hearty last meal before their executions. I used to wonder also whether they will have any appetite at all left before their forced exits. Yes, I too lose my appetite when I am under stress.

May be with years of being in jail their mind would be totally in a state that they just do not understand what is going on.

@allknowing Yes, Z A Bhutto could not wrap his head around the fact he was going to lose his till the final moment. After all, he was the former PM of Pakistan and had appointed the executioner, sort of, Zia-ul-Haq who was the President then. The final moments could well be a blur. And to hell with it!

Maybe they just think of their last meal as something that they should enjoy because it will be their last taste of their favorite food. I have seen it in a movie that i watched before and i really feel pity for the person.
