Hi gang! Sorry I’m late. Normally I myLot while I’m having lunch, but today I had company: my niece and nephew-in-law. They came to town last night for a Corrosion of Conformity concert, and we met for lunch today. I had an old iPad to give them for my grand-niece. It was a great visit!! So on to the rock songs that had a religious theme (since I certainly got blessed today). Here’s another one you probably remember if you were around then. #6: Put Your Hand in the Hand - Ocean I promised BarBara that there’d be a fine representation of Canada on this list…and here we are! Toronto’s Ocean was a one-hit wonder band in the US, with this, their first single, being their only hit. They did have another hit in Canada (1972’s “One More Chance”), but that was about it. That’s not the only Canadian connection, though. This was written by Gene MacLellan, a Canadian singer/songwriter best-known (outside of this song) for writing Anne Murray’s megahit “Snowbird.” Oh, and speaking of her, Anne Murray was the first person to record this song, in 1970. Ocean covered it a year later. This was a major hit in the US, peaking at #2 behind Three Dog Night’s “Joy to the World.” It fit in very well with the religious rock of the time, and is still fondly remembered today. Put Your Hand in the Hand Written by Gene MacLellan recorded by Ocean From Put Your Hand in the Hand, 1971 I wanna tremble:

I always want my neighbors to the north to know I appreciate the great music they’ve given the world. (But the more I watch Dame Edna the more I really need to talk to you about Barry Humphries…..)

@JudyEv — I’ll look him up…and probably be sorry I did. Seriously, I have really enjoyed Humphries. Wish he hadn’t retired…I’d love to see a 90-year-old man out there in high heels..

Celine Dion is a wonderful Canadian performer, but I'm not sure if she did any religious tapes.

La voix du bon Dieu (The Good Lord's Voice) was her debut studio album , released in 1981 but only in Quebec. And she recorded at least two Christmas albums, but in French.

She probably has a Christmas album or two (like everyone else does).

This song I remember well. My favorite lyric is the line about the carpenter clearing the temple. Found this vid of Gene singing the song shortly before his passing.

MacLellan was a very talented singer/songwriter. That first verse will really stomp on a believer’s toes (“the buyers and the sellers were no different fellers than what I profess to be”), won’t it?

@FourWalls Yes, it will. And on a weekend like this dedicated to crass consumerism, it rings especially true.

I don’t think it’s an “official” genre, because these were all pop hits. They had a religious theme to the lyrics, though. I have read that a lot of historians cite this era of rock as the forerunner of contemporary Christian music. I certainly can’t argue that point.

That’s a good possibility. Contemporary worship tends to make use of modern music. When I was in boot camp I went to the “traditional” service one week, then the “contemporary” service the next week. I stuck with the contemporary service. One week they even used Anne Murray’s song “You Needed Me.” In the right context, it easily could be a song of faith.

Oh, yeah, I loved this one, too. It was also on that Roy Clark gospel album…then Anne Murray’s version was on her greatest hits Country album. It took me quite a while to hear Ocean’s rendition.
