Ah, these supplements. They can cost as much as, or more than, medication. In the case of the pictured things, it’s IB Gard, a natural supplement that helps with irritable bowel syndrome. Actually, there’s a companion supplement called FD Gard, which (a) has the same ingredients and (b) cost more. I tend to take this in the winter when my SAD acts up. It’s nothing new. When I was a teenager they called it a “nervous stomach.” “Functional Dyspepsia” sounds far more medical than “nervous stomach” (which sounds like a punk rock band name ). The good thing is, in my old age I’m finding ways to reduce or eliminate the problems. Friday is the anniversary of my mom’s death, so my stomach would normally be in knots right now. Thankfully, the IB Gard does help a lot. That’s one of the things we learn as we get older: “living with” something. I think @LouAvul mentioned the other day that she has her phototherapy light out to help with her SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). I don’t like November and December, and my stomach starts hurting like clockwork on November 1. (That’s how I know it’s somatic.) I’ve gotten used to it, and now I take this IB Gard to help. Your results may vary. I saw an interesting ad on one of my games last night. It’s an app that “pays cash instantly for gift cards.” Apparently you photograph the barcode on the gift card, and give them your account information, and you’re paid! Yeah, what could go wrong with THAT. Cue the P.T. Barnum quote! I’ve been in a rabbit hole lately, dealing with the West Virginia Mine Wars. I want to go see these places next year when it warms up! (Not now, though: I spent enough time going through West Virginia in December when I was stationed in Norfolk.) A little history, lest you think that we as a nation have just gotten nasty and violent in the last ten years or so: coal companies weren’t too keen on their workers joining the United Mine Workers union, and they would stop at NOTHING to keep the unions out. Yes, including murder. The coal companies had “security” working for them that sounds like Hedley Lemarr’s “mugs, pugs, thugs…AND Methodists!” list in Blazing Saddles (well, except the Methodists…don’t think any churchgoing folk would’ve been involved in that). While this generally went on anywhere there was the “threat” of unionization, it seemed to be most pronounced in coal mining regions. It’s a terrible part of American history, and one that you don’t hear very much about. The Battle of Blair Mountain, the “culmination” of sorts in the West Virginia Mine Wars in 1921, was the biggest armed conflict on American soil since the Civil War ended! I’ve been reading this and thinking how on earth do people get this notion that America was such a great, sweet, righteous nation until the “Summer of Love” came along? It’s quite the stereotype, even referenced in Elton John’s “Texan Love Song”: “our American home was clean ‘til you came.” I guess that just calls to mind that oft-repeated quote of George Santayana’s, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Anyway, have a great evening! And here’s the great Harvey Korman reading off the list of villains he wants for his army in Blazing Saddles:

Does it help (the supplement)? Looking at the ingredients, I'd expect it to irritate things more, but stick with it if it's helping you!

It really does! I know it’s odd because sucking on peppermint for my throat usually causes GERD, but this really does help. It’s nearly $30 a box, so it had better help!

@FourWalls I'm glad it does the trick! Have you seen the other IBgard that includes vitamin D? I thought of that one when you mentioned that you take it when your SAD kicks in.

@spiderdust — no, I haven’t seen that. I take a multivitamin daily, though, so I get my vitamin D.

Good to know there is a natural supplement that helps with IBS. When I was young they couldn't find what was wrong with my bowels and stomach so they gave me bottles of liquid that tasted like what the chicken yard smells like.

Back in the 70s the first thing they did was the old barium milkshake. They’ve improved things now, but NOT the taste of those barium milkshakes.

“You know….morons.” Maybe my favorite line in Blazing Saddles. I had to look S boulardii up. I might have to get that eventually (I have an IgM deficiency so saying I live on antibiotics is not an understatement), but right now the IB Gard does well. You be well, too.

@FourWalls Oh yes, I only recently found out about this S boulardi..for me Four Walls, I am experiencing some great energy and ease since starting it a few days ago. It seems to be doing the trick to boost my immunity ..I was on numerous antibiotics and thought I had CDiff..so I got that to ease it and by a miracle, it is boosting me up. Yes, I hope it may help you too if you decide to try it..I got the Now brand specifically off Amazon. I like Now products, they are safe and made here. Yes morons you know hahaha

These issues come up in Jojo Moyes' book The Giver of Stars. It's set in the coal-mining area in Kentucky.

Thanks for sharing your digestive issues (not) just kidding. Glad the supplement helps cause tunny issues are no fun and get in the way of eating one's favorite foods. Funny you mentioned battles in West Virginia as I was listening to a podcast today about Civil War battles there. Northern victories eventually lead to that territory separating from Virginia and statehood. The specific battle mentioned was Cheat Mountain, but there were a few more along there. We are getting quite political these days. I've just had to take issue with that. No one is immune from past historical mistakes, but we've come a long way and will always have to continue to do so. For such a terrible country why do all these immigrants want to come here? Freedom and opportunity come to mind (just my viewpoint). Of course, having an opposing viewpoint to the current administration could get you cancelled, jailed, financially ruined, audited, or permanently barred from social media. Not much freedom of speech these days Guess I got drawn in again to politics a topic I try to avoid here like a cold. But like a cold one eventually will get one. Anyway, no disrespect intended.

Hey, anything that might help someone else’s gut stop hurting is worth mentioning! At least I didn’t go into the gory details. I try to steer clear of politics, because the truth that nobody really wants to acknowledge is that there is no “them” or “us,” just two sides of the same corrupt coin.

@FourWalls Yes, Congress is like a bunch of magicians using a bag of tricks to fool us into thinking they have our best interests at heart. And these guys actually get a salary for spinning the truth.

It’s ridiculous how much of this is a total mystery to people. Blair Mountain isn’t taught in West Virginia schools, and I don’t know if Ludlow is taught in Colorado schools. I hadn’t even heard of the Tulsa race riots until a few years ago.

@FourWalls And then there is the stuff that has been proven false that they dont change. Like the Nez Pierce Indians did make it to Canada.

That gift card scam is the worst! I'm glad your IBgard helps. I was on Amitiza for a couple of years. I started having a bad reaction to it so I quit taking it. Now I just have prunes every day; and I don't get that horrible nausea every day. I still get bloating and gas from it though. TMI. I know. Hope you are having a good day.

I’m staying home today because it’s dreary and rainy outside, and fighting the bed for the fitted sheet is enough exercise for anyone for one day. I never cared for the taste of prunes, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
