I missed my chance!

The last few weeks have been so ridiculously mild that it was far more like September. I was lulled into a false sense of security. I picked the last few tomatoes in November! This is unheard of! So I foolishly thought I didn’t need to rush to gather all the produce from the garden. I have been busy enough with all sorts of things and I figured the last few vegetables would keep where they were. That was a big mistake because now temperatures have plummeted. Yes the last parsnips and beetroot will still keep as they are – they will have to in fact because with the ground frozen hard I can’t dig them up! At least I can still get to the Brussels sprouts. I'm guessing the Brussels sprouts must have been volunteer. Nobody would plant those on purpose.

@DaddyEvil You just might enjoy mine. I cook them with bacon, Splenda brown sugar and a bit of black pepper.

This weather is driving us all crazy. We have to stop planning anything and do it by ear.

It's hard to do that with growing things though isn't it, because you have to plan ahead!

And I made exactly the same mistake. I picked up the last tomatoes from a plant on the balcony the past week. I noticed some hot peppers in the garden, not yet red. Now they are gone.

@Fleura I am going to pick up those hot peppers and see if I can save them.

That's a shame. At least root vegetables will store OK in the ground.

I can't get my head around vegetables frozen in the ground. I freeze mine in the freezer part of the fridge.

It's definitely easier to get them out of there

Pre-refridgerated veggies. Sounds like a time saver!

It is handy having them there, although much easier if I remember to go and pick some before it gets dark!

I still have a few carrots in the ground but the ones I pulled the other day were so small. Nice parsnips. I planted some last year but they never came up.

I love parsnips but they are tricky. They take so long to germinate that by the time you realise not many have grown it's too late to sow any more. One year I sowed a row of seeds and got only three plants - but the parsnips were HUGE! And they were not nasty and woody either, they were really good! This year the results were a bit more normal. I can't grow carrots though, I don't think they like our heavy soil.

The weather is forecast to warm up a little bit next week so maybe I'll be able to get them out then!
