Walnuts are healthy but not for your pocket

I was collecting ingredients for the date and walnut cake that I have plans to bake in a few days. The maid picked them up for me from the grocer and only today I looked at the rates for the different ingredients. Shocked to see how walnut kernels are priced - Rs, 2040 per kilo (2 lbs) I just wanted 110 grams but the minimum pack they said would be 250 gms. I do not think I will enjoy eating that delicious date and walnut cake that I will soon be baking. How is life treating you? Image credit:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:4_walnut_kernels.jpg

Walnut kernels are pricey also here and they are sold in 110 grams packs, $ 3.50 per 110 grams.

@LadyDuck Amazon always comes up with such offers but I had no time and so feel guilty for having spent more than what I should have.

I used to eat them regularly but one gets fed up with anything if it is eaten often. I wanted just 110 grams for my cake but had to go for 250 gms. Since I had no time to go online I bought it from the regular store from where we get our groceries. I checked the Net and even good quality is available much cheaper.

I buy walnuts as they are good for the brain and skin. I use them to make my immunity powder. It's costly but we have to guard our health.

I know dry fruits are costly and I love them but this time if I had more time I could have searched for a better rate.

@allknowing There are different varieties of dry fruits these days- Indian and imported and therefore the prices vary.

@aninditasen I was in a hurry and so did not bother to check. Walnut grown in India are good as well. I have seen them in Kashmir on trees and have even eaten them there.

Dry fruits and nuts are costly especially if you go for good quality one. I have to ignore their prices as we have them in our regular diet. Looking at the prices will make us panic . We have a store called Afzaan Dates and Nuts. It keeps very high quality dry fruits, nuts and other stuffs. I am their monthly customer.

If I had the time I would have got them online as I see they are much cheaper and not necessarily of poor quality7. I think the shop you are talking about was the one from where my friend got me the Medjool dates. My nephew had brought some.from Dubai I liked them so much that I asked this friend of mine to buy them for me. Each cost Rs. 50 but I satiated my craving (lol) I will not go for them again.

@allknowing Yes, their mejdool dates are too good. They have a lots of varieties to choose from. They have few outlets here. Since we include dates and nuts in our regular diet, I visit them at least once in a month.

Many delicious things are pricey and sometimes unhealthy. But there are also many that are pricey things that are not tasty. Life is great so far and best of holidays to you and your family.

It is not the question of not affording. I surely can but when they are available at a much cheaper price and in good quality it is natural I suppose feeling guilty about it I am a lavish spender but never squander. This I feel I am squandering - not a big amount but I feel nice if I get a good deal. (lol)

I hear you. The squirrels in my neighborhood are quite the high falluting guys cause they munch on walnuts from my trees. The fruitcakes we made this year probably cost over 20 dollars each, maybe more due to walnuts, almond and pecans being in them plus butter and dried fruits.

Dry fruits are the most expensive ingredients in certain cakes but for me there is no Christmas if I do not bake that date and walnut cake.

I am not the one to crib when it comes to food but I had no choice but to go for these as I had no time to buy online. On checking I saw I would have got them at half the rate and that too from established suppliers. If I had planned a bit better I would have had enough time.
